If it doesn't have action news camera jerking for non-action scenes and schizophrenic zoom adjust every other time an actor reacts to a line, I won't have a problem with the cinematography. If it doesn't have stupid shit like common-sense scientist characters who get lost even with a mapping device and then decide to french kiss an alien penis snake, I'd be fine with it. But if it deserves the poor ratings I've seen on RT on the crummy adaptation from the book, that would be distracting.

But you brought up Baz Luhrman like he was some sort of Uve Boll or Michael Bay of cheese cinema and for the life of me, what you said still makes no fucking sense. He's got like a half a dozen movies to his name plus a few shorts. What part of your brain ticked off the "oh this filmmaker...newbie sure won't like this movie because of it."

Tromeo & Juliet - cheese/10

Have to remember it's a Lloyd Kaufman film so it's not for people like Jay.

Skyfall - 5/10

Not sure why I waited so long to watch it but I wish I had waited longer.  The movie would have easily gotten 10/10 from me had it not been for the blatant, idiotic and needless canon shattering changes they made to the storyline.  Not that the Bond series has any kind of real story order, but what little it did have they completely ruined.  What's worse was they managed to do it with two relatively unimportant characters. I'll elaborate:

1.  M.  They killed of Judy Dench's M character.  They made it obvious that Casino Royal>QoS>Skyfall were part of a series of Bond's FIRST double 0 mission.  If Judy Dench's M character is killed off in this series, who the fuck is Judy Dench playing in the Pierce Brosnan bond series?  Is she a clone?  She certainly isn't a different M, she has the same mannerisms and personality.  Why couldn't they cast a different person as M?  Why did they feel the need to kill her off?  Stupid.

2.  Moneypenny.  WTF.  Moneypenny is black now.  Why?  Who asked for that?  Why is it necessary?  Moneypenny has been a timid white girl since the 60's and suddenly shes a tactical operator black chick.  In all the other movies she is a timid girly girl.  Remember in Goldeneye how James scared the shit out of her by driving fast around corners?  Now she (and technically before Goldeneye) she participates in high speed chases and shoots sniper rifles.  I remember (although I can't remember which movie) she fumbled around with a pistol, but before that she was a cleared field agent who was expected to snipe a guy off a moving train (lolfail).  Fuck whoever shoehorned that shit into the script.

The movie's biggest annoying flaw seems to be the fact that a spymaster was trying to elude detection in the company of an old duffer waving a flashlight around. Next to that, I couldn't care less if Moneypenny was a fat Italian plumber from Brooklyn.

To be fair, the new movies are part of a reboot. How Bond get his DB5 for example differs from how he originally acquired it. As for Moneypenny, well, Felix Leiter changed colour at least twice. I know one was an unofficial Bond film but still.

For all we know, the black Moneypenny is really Old Man Jenkins. And he would have gotten away with it too, if it hadn't been for that meddling audience.

I know right?  He was shot twice in the chest, surely had some internal bleeding from the beating he took, fell 300 feet and landed on his back into water, sank at least 30 feet while unconscious, but the next scene he is sipping margaritas in Tahiti or some shit.

Also, I get that it is a reboot, but if it is WHY USE THE SAME ACTORS!?  Cameo's of course, but to used established actors in established roles is just fucking retarded.

ALLLLLSSSOOOOO, anyone notice in all of the action sequences that Bond has multiple face lacerations but in the next scene which apparently takes place merely hours apart his face is completely healed and has no scars?  Are we sure Michael Bay didn't direct this series?

Same characters, different worlds. The franchise has seen like eight (?) changes in Bond actors, so I'm not going to worry overmuch if Craig's Bonds are supposed to be a reboot, and watch whatever Bond I want instead. So today I watched Moonraker, and it made more sense than Skyfall.

They should just give up and have time lord regeneration in the plot like Doctor Who.
moonraker looks out of control i would love to watch that haha!

The Gatekeepers - 10/10

Aired on national telly last week. All the six heads of the Israeli Shin Bet from 1967 to 2011 had agreed to be interviewed for this documentary (incidentally the first time any of them have been interviewed). They talk about their work in security and defense, the moral and ethical considerations and implications that come with it and the wider Israel/Palestine problem and politics they've had to deal with (while openly speculating about the future).

A must see for anyone interested in security work and the Israeli / Palestinian states. Definitely a must-see for the members of our local idiot club who like to periodically voice their opinions on politics and actions in Israel and Palestine. It's an eye opening and informative documentary.

DVDs will be available in july.

Jurassic Park 3D

Jurassic Park has been my favourite film since I was five years old. My parents asked me what my favourite part of it was after the credits had rolled, I tearfully exclaimed "the end!" This was partly because I was completely traumatised and partly because I fell in love with John Williams' score - I eventually would learn to play the theme on the piano and for some reason it's the only thing I can still remember how to do from my eight years of piano-playing.

It took about a day for it to sink in how awesome it was and I was completely hooked. I got swept up in the dinosaur craze of the early 90s completely and utterly. When the film came out on VHS I immediately rented it. When it screened for the first time on TV I dutifully recorded it and watched it so many times that not only had I pretty much committed the script to memory I also memorised the ad breaks, (important when fast-forwarding to know when to stop.)

But it had been a while since I last saw it. I sort of felt that given I had murdered it through repetition I wouldn't get any enjoyment out of seeing it in 3D on a big screen. I'm happy to say I was wrong. Despite seeing the film probably over 100 times and knowing what happens I could feel the adrenalin and the excitement, it was fantastic. The 3D is well done but really the impact was seeing it high definition on the big screen. Everything else the film already has going for it.

Jurassic Park is one of those rare blockbusters that was stretching the notion of what was possible. The use of then brand new CGI may have aged a bit, the skin on the dinosaurs looks more plastic-like than modern CGI and the transition between animatronic and CG is more noticeable. Still, the CG is better than a lot of modern examples - and it's twenty years old now. Twenty! It doesn't really matter through. The animation of movement is still top notch and as the immaculate artistry of the Stan Winston animatronic models and the sound sells the effect of living dinosaurs fully. Moreso than any film using CG alone.

Great acting, great directing, great special effects, great sound design, great score. I know it sounds old man-ish but they don't really make blockbusters like that any more. The Lord of the Rings films sort of got there but Jurassic Park still beats them hands down I reckon.

There were some kids about five years old at the cinema. I wonder what they thought of it.

Its a shame we executed instead of interviewed on TV the Nazi leaders, we should have heard their side of the holocaust.

It's pretty typical that you would write off the documentary before even watching it. Judging it by a provocative and showy trailer. A trailer ffs. You absolutely have shit for brains. Thank you for taking the bait and allowing me to prove the point, though.

What you'll find if you actually watch the entire film is that these are 6 very intelligent, articulate individuals who are all too aware of the problems in their state. They spent the last 50 years presiding over every major operation and scandal in the Israeli secret services, noone is more qualified to speak on the subject. I don't think you even gave it any thought why any, let alone all of them at the same time, agreed to be interviewed last year either. Why now?

Maybe you should just watch it.

Another clip for you dil

Amazing animatronics. Have you seen that video documenting the Stan Winston studio construction of the T-rex? That thing is a piece of art.

(Animatronics are special effects by the way if that's what you were implying.)

I also thing the animatronics in the new Star Wars films were dec--oh wait. That was just CGI nonsense.

Back to Jurassic Park.
