House runs on parliamentary rules. A simple majority is all you need there. Though redistricting is a massive problem.

The cuts are a joke. The administration is doing the same shit as the teachers unions 'if we don't get our school tax rate increase we will cut all after school programs' knowing all the athletes will cry to their parents. The world isn't going to end when they lop off $44BN off of next years budget. It's a drop in the bucket.

The story isn't about the money. It is about congress sucking. The government still should be working to make deals to avoid automatic cuts. That was why I mentioned the parliament.

Why? They want the cuts. They just don't want the blame. We need to make cuts, our debt is massive.

This was the only way they could do it. If they tried to go line by line through the budget they would end up pissing everyone off when their sacred cow hit the block. This way everyones sacred cow gets hit equally. It's completely inefficient and stupid this way, but that's the price for rule by committee (democracy).

Clearly, the President wants the cuts, too. Otherwise, he would've taken the time to meet (or at least extend the invitation) with Congressional leaders this whole time.

He knows a decrease in the amount of increase in the budget won't have the hyperbolic impacts he keeps trotting out. He's just hoping the public isn't paying attention to the facts and wholly blames the Congressional republicans for everything (even though the impact will be minimal to non-existent), resulting in the dems taking the House in 2014.

They still are. Most the idiots in Congress read and believe Krugman.

What can you expect from lawyers though? They aren't trained in most of the shit they pass laws on: the fatal flaw in the system.

america's politics is basically a legal fraternity class, yep true.

although that's not necessarily an argument in favour of technocrats. many of the european states currently deep in shit had an elected technocrat class, rather than any sort of traditional 'political' class or 'lawyer elite'. italy actually was a more technocratic nation than many others in europe - and something like 15% of all of their officials had been convicted of some crime relating to fraud/embezzlement/bribery etc. having people expressly qualified for the job of ruling and wielding power doesn't necessarily make them any better at it.

I'm not a fan of technocrats either, as most of their beliefs are based on theory, or heavily influenced by political ideology. A trained economist can run an economy into the ground just as quickly as a lawyer can, and their arrogance is more likely to make them try.

It's why I believe in limited government. People get by just fine without ignorant arrogant people meddling in their affairs. Keep the law simple, the scope shallow.

Does anyone else think that 2 year term limits on Congressmen might be a little too short?

With ever lengthening election cycles, maybe. But thats not a good excuse to change things

He wants the cuts more than anyone, pinning them on the GOP is a genius move.

It was amazing how quickly he turned his pet media attack dogs on Bob Woodward after he penned his story...
