Women in all branches of the military soon will have unprecedented opportunities to serve on the front lines of the nation's wars.
Leon Panetta, in one of his last acts as President Obama's defense secretary, is preparing to announce the policy change, which would open hundreds of thousands of front-line positions and potentially elite commando jobs after more than a decade at war, the Pentagon confirmed Wednesday.
The groundbreaking move recommended by the Joint Chiefs of Staff overturns a 1994 rule banning women from being assigned to smaller ground combat units. Panetta's decision gives the military services until January 2016 to seek special exceptions if they believe any positions must remain closed to women.
"This policy change will initiate a process whereby the services will develop plans to implement this decision, which was made by the secretary of defense upon the recommendation of the Joint Chiefs of Staff," a senior defense official told reporters on condition of anonymity.

I'm sorry, but I just can't support this. Women have a completely different physique, and this is already reflected by the fact that they take different physical fitness tests than male soldiers with much lower standards. It's why we don't have coed Olympic games etc. When I was in, I weighed 240 lbs, how would any but the biggest outlier butch woman be able to drag me out of combat if I was hit? Could they kick down the same doors? How is some guy going to react when he sees his girlfriend blown up next to him? It's just an overall radical diminishment of standards and I just can't accept that this is a good idea.

I think the simple solution is to require the same standard of physical fitness for any woman that would apply to be in these positions. It would be really difficult which is a great way to look like they are 'allowing' women in these roles.

I would never feel comfortable being in a position where I couldn't physically remove a friend from a deadly situation.

If I were motivated to be 'on the front lines' I would train my ass off to meet those physical requirements and those are the only kind of people that should be in that position anyway.

If you are using the term girlfriend as in someone you are dating...simple...don't date the people that you are going to go into combat with. If you were saying girlfriend in a girl friend way...probably the same as if your guy friend was blown up I guess.

Not saying all women would do that, but some would. Some women do end up getting pregnant in the military and end up having to leave because of it, some of those are relationships with other men in the same military. I think women would generally make good soldiers and fighters if sent to combat, but the my main concern lies with how men in the same squad as her will act around her. Plus the pregnancy thing I mentioned.
It is a bit short sighted to project your own feelings and responses upon others. I would give the soldiers that we entrust with frontline missions a little more credit than that.

Let's solve the pregnancy issues...give all women that choose to enter into these positions (twss) an IUD...

They have lifted Don't ask Don't tell...soldiers are already getting busy with other soldiers...they just can't get pregnant.

I was in a mixed unit when I deployed, and approximately half of the women in my battalion magically got pregnant at the same time when we got our deployment orders, and not just the enlisted women either. A company commander decided it was an opportune time to get pregnant as well.

We had one girl in my platoon make the mistake of leaving a thumb drive plugged into my platoon sergeants PC that had dozens of pictures of her participating in an orgy in her trailer. All of the participants were married and got smacked with adultery charges. lulz were had by all

I don't think that will change...but, for those women that are serious and motivated to take on more direct combat roles, they should be held to the same physical standards and by qualifying it should be clear that they are serious soldiers.

There were rare exceptions that were there to serve their country proudly, and I was glad to serve alongside them, but it was maybe 10% of the population. Most of the males I served with weren't worth a damn either, but the ratio was a lot higher in their favor. I know I've said it before on this forum somewhere, but I had a rule of thumb that whenever we had a new female assigned to our unit that she would either be married, pregnant or both within six months of arriving. I was wrong probably five times, and three of the five were lesbians.

I know I'm coming off as a misogynist asshole in this thread, but I really only feel this way about jobs that involve strict physical requirements: cops, firefighters, combat MOS' etc.
