Nothing much just a murder suicide in the lobby of a crowded vegas casino
A man and woman were dead after a possible murder-suicide Friday night inside the Excalibur lobby.

Las Vegas police responded to the Strip hotel about 8:30 p.m. after gunfire erupted in the front lobby, officer Laura Meltzer said.

The man died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The woman died at University Medical Center about two hours later, police said.

The hotel remained open, but the lobby was closed as detectives tried to piece together what happened and why.

The woman worked at the hotel as a concierge, homicide Lt. Ray Steiber said. He said investigators did not know the relationship between the pair.

FYI, the number of massacres in the U.S. has declined.  Because it's schoolkids this time means everyone suddenly cares.

What do you suggest we do?  Just go door to door and take peoples guns away?  OK, say we did that.  You just took away all the guns from people who legally and properly acquired them, people who passed the vetting process.  Guess who didn't get their guns taken away?

So now that there are no more guns, how hard is it for someone to still acquire a gun to kill someone with?  LOL.  Been to a gun show recently (of course not).  It is not very hard to buy a gun with no registration or serial.

As far as the mass murderers go, given that they can't readily access a handgun or assault rifle it wouldn't be very hard for them to get a shotgun (a firearm even YOU can buy easily in Faggotville, AU)?  Would Sandy Hook been any less tragic if the guy had walked in with a Mossberg shotgun with a box of buckshot and just went to town?  Would he have killed less people?  I think not, he probably would have killed more.  Maybe he just walks up, chains the doors shut and lights the place on fire.  Is that any better?  Perhaps he sits at home and makes a bunch of pipe bombs and throws them through the windows.  Would that make you feel better?  Someone bent on killing a large group of people won't be detered just because you limit thier access to firearms, they will just find another way to carry out their plan.

Firearms are just the easy way for people to do things like this, not THE REASON they do things like this.  The guy didn't wake up next to an AR-15 and say "HEY!  An AR-15!  I should murder some kids with it!".

A man stood in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Southern California on Saturday and fired 50 shots into the air.

Police didn’t say why, but his actions prompted many stores in the open-air Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach to lock their doors.

No one was hurt by the bullets raining down, but one person suffered minor injuries while trying to flee the area, police said.

Newport Beach Police quickly took the man, 42-year-old Marcos Sarinana Gurrola, into custody, but not before calling in the bomb squad when the man said he had more ammunition in the trunk of his car.

Of course, no-one cares if poor black people are shooting each other up.
What do you suggest we do?  Just go door to door and take peoples guns away?
I've made various simple suggestions since the beginning of this thread, most of which don't involve taking your toys away -  it would be worthwhile to stop maniacs getting hold of guns no?

Wouldn't it make sense not to have untraceable people buying untraceable guns?

So why make it easy for them? The harder it is the fewer there will be surely?

So otherwise your plan also is to do nothing, let the massacres continue?
The regular slaughter of women and children is a price you're prepared for others to pay for the supposed 'freedom' you think you have?

Morgan Freeman's brilliant take on what happened on Friday:

"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed
people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

You're mostly correct, but missing a critical distinction in there.

For all crimes, from harassment to murder & rape, the mentally ill and mentally challenged are, as a percentage, more likely to be victims than the average person.  Predators and assholes look for the weak and vulnerable to prey upon.

For random acts of mass murder, however, you pretty much have to be mentally ill to commit such an act.
Sane people don't purposely kill a bunch of kids.

In logical form;
All mentally ill people are not mass murderers, all mass murderers are mentally ill.

I am NOT implying that the mentally ill should be stigmatized or criminalized. I am saying that mental illness needs to be more widely recognized, less stigmatized, and better treated.  It does not matter if someone uses matches, knives, guns, fists, rape, or explosives - it matters that there are too many unstable mentally ill people with too little support, supervision, and hope.

A life of internal torment, external harassment and derision, and a world that seems to direct nothing but hate & pain (or apathy and nothingness) at them - it is not terribly surprising that some of them snap and bring that hate and pain back at the world.

We don't need more cops or more laws - we need more psychiatrists and better funded hospitals for the mentally ill, and less social stigma attached to mental illness.

Because you can't wage a war on ideas. It's why religious warfare is so damned futile. As long as one person is left alive with an opposing belief, it will eventually grow back and perhaps flourish. Short of committing genocide against the entire Muslim population of the world, wiping out every book referring to them, and every writing written by them, you can't stamp out 'Muslim extremists'.

We aren't there to commit genocide.
Military is there to achieve military objectives, as decided by political leadership.

The Muslims of the middle east have legitimate complaints as to how they have been treated by the western world.
They also have a pile of internal issues that they scapegoat the Jews and the West for.
Then they have another pile of historical hatred for certain peoples, nations, and issues.

As long as those issues (real or imagined) have not been addressed, and as long as Jihad is a culturally accepted outlet in Muslim culture, there will continue to be Muslim Extremists.

Helpful hint: As long as the Bible, the Torah, and the Koran exist, the followers of those books will keep being pissed about the historical grudges documented in those holy books.
