So I have undertaken the job of doing all the body work on my car over the past few months. Been trying to sand off the flaking clear coat and some of the other multiple paint jobs that my poor car has been through. There are at least 3 different types of paint on my car, the factory black, black with green glitter and black with blue glitter. The jackass who painted my car before it was sold to me didn't tape off anything so I need to find new weather stripping because all the paint that is on them is all cracked and looks like shit now.

Also keep in mind this is the first time I have done body work to a car (or anything for that matter) ever.
Nice work!

My brother bought a car from someone that had done a lot of modifications to it. He had taped over the check engine light on the dash because he couldn't figure out how to make it go away. That car is such a piece of shit. My stepfather had to fabricate new engine mounts for it because surprise! the guy never bothered bolting it down. It was just sitting there on the brackets and would torque itself into the hood whenever he accelerated too quickly. Told him he was an idiot for even considering the car, but he insisted.

My compressor is a 15lb Kobalt so I assume the hose is Kobalt brand too

Right, drove to a ski resort with some mates and had some car discussions.
We were commenting on the cars' shitty performance was just down to the car being weighed down and up hills. I added that the higher altitude had an effect as well. They scoffed that a higher altitude/elevation reduces power significantly, I am convinced otherwise but can't find anything credible (ie. not a car forum) to back it up. Anyone help with some useful links?

Engine power will decrease in proportion to the ambient pressure.

This looks handy for tubrocharged diesel engines.
http://corinto.pucp.edu.pe/aseimec/site … aoping.pdf

Otherwise:
"Due to lower air density at high altitudes, the horsepower of an internal combustion engine will
decrease approximately 3.5% for each increase of 1,000 feet in altitude"
http://www.triptac.org/Documents/Reposi … Hi_Alt.pdf

There's even a nifty table.

Elevation  Engine Power Loss
(Feet)
0 ‐
1,000 3.5%
2,000 7.0%
3,000 10.5%
4,000 14.0%
5,000 17.5%
6,000 21.0%
7,000 24.5%
8,000 28.0%
9,000 31.5%
10,000 35.0%

I'd convert it into liberal faggot metres but fuck you.

But then would temperature offset some of the density loss? We were at about 3500feet and lower than 0 degrees most of the time.

some cars require a WOT event to recalculate the barometric pressure and adjust the fuel mixture.  and some cars require a key off/on cycle to perform the same calculations.  but the variance isn't generally even noticeable unless you have malfunctioning input sensors.

but as dilbert posted, with less oxygen comes less power.

I've always been tempted to paint a car with heat sensitive material. Good idea, bad?

e: naah. I don't have anything I think it'll look good on, and the 87 ramcharger would be freaking overkill. lol

Cold air is denser, which engines like. Turbo charged engines have an intercooler which cools the air going into the intakes down so that it's denser so there is a bigger bang.

But conversely, at higher altitudes, yes the air is colder and therefore denser, the air pressure drops and there's less oxygen in it, which means a smaller bang.

So yes, higher altitudes can cause performance loss.

At the Brazilian Grand Prix, I think the cars lose something like 50-60 BHP due to the altitude above sea level the track is.

Well I know about air density and temperature relations with altitude, just didn't know if it was significant for cars and how much they lose.

You might as well take your car to the zoo and let angry baboons loose on it as take it to most garages.

Stupid monkeys at Bridgestone jacked my Subaru up on the diff - whhich you shouldn't do on a live back axle let alone independent suspension.

Stupid monkeys at Subaru put the wheel nuts on so tight they warped the brake rotors.

Stupid monkeys at an exhaust place put the sealant on the outside after assembling the exhaust.

Even when you're standing there watching them they do stupid stuff. I hate garages.

Cantire is a hardware store that has a garage. Everyone working there is pretty much a first year mechanic.
