Yes, Uzique, society needs poets and philosophers.
In about the same measure that it needs soldiers.
Too many of either, though, and society stops functioning properly.
(I don't know that you could actually be both soldier and poet. Ode to a Sucking Head Wound just doesn't work...)

Hitler was a painter and soldier too.
mixed results mixing the two.

Well if that's the case our society currently has far too many soldiers, far too much war, and far too little support for the arts and culture.rdx-fx wrote:

In which case Dilbert's argument really is absurd. We need more humanities research if anything! (Funding for public arts and humanities research has been slashed dramatically [cough] in the last few years with the economic slump; we keep pouring money into killing farmers and tribesmen in far-off dustbowls...). All the while our mainstream culture devolves into ever more barbarism and decadence: TV reality shows, the sexualisation of everything, 'talent' contests and populist orgasmatrons, insipid and superficial fetishisms, etc. Our culture is in rapid decline, getting ever more vapid, vacuous and dumb, whilst our high-arts are being cut to shreds by philistines (both government ministers put in charge of the arts during our current government have been well-known boneheads when it comes to their area of ministerial rule).

Why are you not using your Uzique account?
lol
It's not devolving.aynrandroolz wrote:

The mainstream has always catered to the lowbrow.
Emotional reaction is easy, thinking is hard - hence most people spend most of their time emotively reacting to whatever is spoon fed to them.
It has always been this way.
The specifics may change, mass mob mentality does not.
Apathy destroys more than Evil could ever dream of.
Look at US politics - do you choose Mooooo, or Baaaaaaa?
"None of the above" is not an available option.
You must choose; Sheep or Cattle.

Shocking and ironic, centuries before that was a thing.
The Globe Theater was so high brow back in the day...
and later
I thought Americans were supposed to have good teeth?
And yes, mass culture has always been there, Rdx. Came to the fore aroundabout the turn of the 20th century. Ever since then the world has been full of people like Dilbert, questioning the value of high-arbited taste and truth and beauty, all the while buying £70 stadium tickets to stroll along in besocked sandals to watch a corporate creation writhe around on a stage with his/her androgynous wobbly bits hanging out.
I don't think you know what you're talking about to be honest. Safe to say I don't think there are many Shakespeare scholars or Elizabethan historians here. Shakespeare had bawdy jokes to make people laugh, yes, but I'd hardly say he was a "low-brow" writer because he included a few puns and sexual innuendos. That was actually quite a new and revolutionary thing back then - and the theatre was feared by cultural conservatives (i.e. Puritans) as a force of dissent. But Shakespeare was a courtier more than anything else - he just never forgot his roots, so to speak. There's a simple joy in a cock joke, after all. Hardly discounts the fact he was one of the best wordsmiths the English language has ever known; a language includes curse-words and taboo subjects, too, you know. In the opening chapters of Joyce's Ulysses is an episode where the main protagonist is detailed taking a shit in a cold and dirty Dublin outhouse-- taking a shit and then wiping his arse with a popular newsmagazine (then a new format). It is painstakingly detailed. See, even supposedly 'lowbrow' content can have a high-brow purpose and implied critique.Ilocano wrote:

Streisand and Elton John tickets are still more expensive than Coldplay tickets.

Wouldn't make sense anyway, considering he is in his 40's and if he wants to fuck over such people he would have to fuck over himself as well.

Well, once I'm in the Army or something else takes place, I will. What then, gonna say "God you are gonna need to get killed by someone accidentally while doing drills"?13urnzz wrote:
