In which case Dilbert's argument really is absurd. We need more humanities research if anything! (Funding for public arts and humanities research has been slashed dramatically [cough] in the last few years with the economic slump; we keep pouring money into killing farmers and tribesmen in far-off dustbowls...). All the while our mainstream culture devolves into ever more barbarism and decadence: TV reality shows, the sexualisation of everything, 'talent' contests and populist orgasmatrons, insipid and superficial fetishisms, etc. Our culture is in rapid decline, getting ever more vapid, vacuous and dumb, whilst our high-arts are being cut to shreds by philistines (both government ministers put in charge of the arts during our current government have been well-known boneheads when it comes to their area of ministerial rule).

I don't think you know what you're talking about to be honest. Safe to say I don't think there are many Shakespeare scholars or Elizabethan historians here. Shakespeare had bawdy jokes to make people laugh, yes, but I'd hardly say he was a "low-brow" writer because he included a few puns and sexual innuendos. That was actually quite a new and revolutionary thing back then - and the theatre was feared by cultural conservatives (i.e. Puritans) as a force of dissent. But Shakespeare was a courtier more than anything else - he just never forgot his roots, so to speak. There's a simple joy in a cock joke, after all. Hardly discounts the fact he was one of the best wordsmiths the English language has ever known; a language includes curse-words and taboo subjects, too, you know. In the opening chapters of Joyce's Ulysses is an episode where the main protagonist is detailed taking a shit in a cold and dirty Dublin outhouse-- taking a shit and then wiping his arse with a popular newsmagazine (then a new format).
