What's with the huge gaps?
Edit: also, how do they define killing sprees?  I notice Oklahoma City isn't on there, as that would go pretty far off the chart.
I think the gaps are periods of a few years where no shootings occurred

Why is the last one called "Batman?" Call it by its movie title or by the asshole's self-inflicted identity.

Maybe in rural areas. People living in suburbs just outside of a major city, not so much. I noticed in my state, the most urban and dense in the U.S., people who work in the big cities like Newark tend to drive long distances to their jobs. people think they are too good to live in urban areas so they blow thousands in gas just to get distance between them and 'poor city people'.
Mac, I like you and all, but sometimes I think your world view is very limited.

I went to Burlington, Mass (A SUBURB of Boston) for training. To use the public transportation system, it was going to take me over 4 hours to get into Boston proper. Taking one bus to another bus to another bus to a train to another train to a train hub to another train... And a wait time between each one. Granted, it was only going to cost me like $2, but I couldn't spend 8 hours a day, everyday, just on going to and from work if I worked in Boston... Which was only 9 miles away. Taxi fare was going to be $75 one way.

This was not "rural" in the slightest, but you would have to have a car if you lived/worked there.

OKC is 621 square miles. The metro area is nearly 6,400 miles. This area as a whole is just over 200 people per square mile, but that density grows quickly to 1,000 people per square mile as you move in from toward downtown OKC, and is over 500 before you get into the actual city limits. It may not be as dense as out east, but it certainly isn't rural either.

Oklahoma City was a killing spree. It was a terrorist attack. Same reason the WTC isn't on here.

RV PARK KILLINGS: 'Witness shooter' recounts shootout with gunman who killed two in Early

https://www.ktxs.com/image/view/-/15823482/highRes/1/-/maxh/240/maxw/300/-/duf4ya/-/earlyshooting-jpg.jpg

EARLY, Texas - During Sunday afternoon's shooting that left three dead at the Peach House RV Park in Early, Vic Stacy assisted officers in shooting alleged gunman Charles Conner.

Police said Conner shot and killed David Michael House, 58, and Iris Valentina Martinez Calaci, 53, over an argument the three reportedly had over the couple's two dogs. Conner, 58, was shot and was killed after also allegedly gunning down the couple’s dogs.

On Wednesday, Stacy recounted Sunday’s frightening events.

Stacy said he was enjoying a movie on what seemed to be a typical Sunday afternoon, when he heard gunshots outside. Moments later, Stacy received a phone call that turned him into what many would call a hero.

When Stacy answered a phone call from neighbor, he went into action.

"He said, 'You need to get over here quick, and bring your gun, I got a dead body laying over here in the road,' " Stacy said.

Stacy grabbed his .357 magnum and headed to his neighbor’s RV.

"I could see Charlie, the gunman, come out of his trailer, and he had a rifle in his hand with a scope on it," said Stacy.

As Stacy was positioning himself in front of Brown's RV, he could see Calaci's body lying in a pool of blood.

Early Police Sgt. Steven Means was the first on the scene, and Conner immediately began shooting at him, Stacy said.

After his neighbor asked him if he was going to shoot at Conner, Stacy recalled saying, “I sure am when I get a good shot."

Stacy fired at Conner and hit him in the thigh, knocking Conner to the ground. Still alive, Conner fired another round back at him, Stacy said, noting he then fire four more rounds at Conner.

"The officer hit him, I think, in the shoulder one time and just barely grazed his rib cage, I think, on the left side," Stacy said.

Conner was no longer moving, Stacy said, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Brown County Sheriff Bobby Grubbs said the outcome could have been a lot different if Stacy hadn’t had his gun and the presence of mind to do what he did Sunday afternoon.

Teenager kills 8, wounds 5 in China knife attack

After a falling-out with his girlfriend, the teen killed two of her family members and six more people before fleeing, according to a state-run newspaper.

BEIJING — A teenager killed eight people with a knife and wounded five more in northeast China after falling out with his girlfriend, state media said Thursday.

The teen killed two of her family members and six more people before fleeing, the state-run Legal Daily newspaper said. It reported he was caught but did not describe the circumstances.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the attack took place Wednesday night in Liaoning province. Media said the 17-year-old suspect is from Fushun city and his surname is Li. The attack happened in Yongling town.

Police in Xinbin county, which oversees the town, declined to comment.

Violent crimes are growing more common in China. There was a string of knife attacks against schoolchildren across the country in early 2010 that killed nearly 20 and wounded more than 50.

Random acts of violence and heroism are supposed to serve what purpose in this discussion?  We acknowledge that acts like the aurora shooting are random - outliers to the norm.  Acts of heroism are the same.  We could make arguments for and against guns based on these random acts, but in the end they are random.  Yes, people go on crazy sprees  with knifes too - we all get that we shouldn't have a knee-jerk reaction to ban all knives based on some stupid fuck stabbing people - just like we agree we shouldn't ban guns as a knee-jerk reaction to the Aurora shootings.  Should we have a knee-jerk reaction and allow everyone to carry concealed weapons because someone in a trailer park in texas shot and killed a shooter?  Couldn't you use that same example and create an emotive response to further curtail weapons so the dude in the trailer park that ended up shooting people possibly would not have been able to go on his spree?  It does nothing for the discussion in my opinion.  I don't think you should use extreme examples as the guidelines to creating or removing restrictions.

Random killing sprees are relevant because they influence politics where firearms and other weapons are concerned. I don't see the problem with reposting articles.

posting an article with no supporting content is fucking stupid.  There is no point.  In ANY thread here.

We should foam at the mouth over these stories like politicians do? OK

Shall we start rounding up the undesirables, the crazies, the radicals, and the imbeciles, m'lord?

It would do great service to the realm, if we should disallow the lowly masses any item they might bring harm upon their betters with.

They are overfond of their drink, and their large automobiles. Shall we start with those?

I don't agree. A lot of threads are started in DST on the basis of one news clipping or another. Since the subject of this thread has already been established, while nice to see, the burden of supplying support or counter statements for parts of posted articles hardly falls on the shoulders of the individual who linked and/or quoted said article. About the time it's hijacked to post NASCAR or anti-gay corporate CEO news would be the point where relevancy has fallen off the deep end.

The forum doesn't really lend itself to formal debate, so you can't really expect to see much of it.

Well, when you see people trying to restrict or demonize your hobby, let me know how you feel.
