Unfortunately the Liberals know enough not to replace Tony. One of the major weapons they've been hitting the Government with is the 'indecisiveness' in regards to leadership, if they replace Abbott they forfeit this. Unless Abbott decides to step down but that's about as likely as him deciding to support same-sex marriage. And what reason do the Liberals have to replace him? The party and Abbott are both polling very well. Just because anyone with political awareness is far more hesitant to welcome Abbott as an alternate PM doesn't make any difference to them. They want power, they don't care if they've got the right person for the job.

Liberals getting power is pretty much inevitable but they're not going to let up at all and let the Parliament create good unhindered policy. Looking at the recent COAG meeting about the NDIS you can see that Liberal State Government are following the party line in making things as difficult as possible. Despite all parties agreeing to the NDIS Vic and NSW have continually objected to the states having any financial input. Qld Premier Campbell Newman was a part of this and even accused Gillard of 'quibbling about the price'. Are you kidding? How can you accuse the commonwealth of being stingy when you're refusing to contribute? But of course the Liberals want to make the commonwealth pay for as much of the scheme as possible. Because as certain as they are of gaining power the final nail in the coffin that they are just itching to hammer in is the promised budget surplus. If they can work to prevent this from happening they can coast into power, probably even score a result like the Qld Coalition.

Also, Joe Hockey a suitable leader? No thanks. He's the Coalition's chief "I have an idea to fix everything but I'm not telling you about it." perpetrator.

TWENTY snakes have been euthanased after they were found to be a hybrid of two native species.
Environment officials in Adelaide say the snakes were advertised for sale by a licensed breeder and were found to be a cross between Bredi pythons and coastal carpet pythons.
Cross-breeding native species is illegal.
"We don't like to have to euthanase animals, but there are a number of problems associated with cross-breeding of species," SA fauna permits unit manager Sonya Nicholls said.
"We are not trying to stop people from keeping or selling protected natives.
"But it is very important that everyone who does this understands their legal requirements, as well as their social and environmental obligations."
Ms Nicholls said it was important that breeders maintained the purity of genetic stock to ensure the long-term survival of Australia's native species.
If a species becomes extinct in the wild it might become necessary to use captive animals to reintroduce it to its native habitat.

I suppose it might be fun to try and create something more poisonous, but I think Australia is already ahead on that one, so it makes sense to have laws against it.

I'm not saying I would want this but if one did perhaps want to create a super-snake Australia would be the place to do it. Breed some of Australia's deadliest snakes in the world together, throw in a Python for funsies and boom. All you need for a jolly good weekend.

I don't see the point of adding python.
Maybe one of those flying lizards, that would be neat.

Probably we should let the other countries see if they can catch up a bit, then BAM pull out a deadly poisonous flying lizard snake.

Hmm, so many of our animals are so mind-bogglingly venomous already that making them 'more' poisonous seems to be the very definition of overkill to me.

We could create a python-king-brown-irikanji-flying-lizard chimera and drop a breeding pair in a quiet corner of New Zealand.
So Australia would have some competition.

UNIVERSITY College London chief executive David Travers wants South Australia to change its time zone as part of the state's rebranding bid, to align with business in the east and ensure the state is no longer seen by some as an international laughing stock.
Mr Travers, who served South Australia as deputy agent-general in London for four years, has written an open letter to Premier Jay Weatherill saying the state either needs to move forward by 30 minutes to align with the eastern states or move back.

"This simple policy change would send a clear and unambiguous signal to the international business community that South Australian was not different when it came to doing business," Mr Travers said.

South Australia is one of only six international locations operating on an off-kilter time zone, and has done so since 1898.

In 1995 the state government undertook a legislative review of the time zone anomaly, but made no changes.

London-based agent-general Bill Muirhead, who promotes trade on behalf of the state, also called for an alignment with Sydney and Melbourne.
"I believe it not only makes us a laughing stock, it also costs people dealing with us a lot of money in wasted time and over-complicated arrangements when trying to do business," Mr Muirhead said.

Mr Weatherill yesterday acknowledged a time change made sense from an international perspective and for businesses with interstate links.
"However, I don't believe there is strong community support for changing the time zone," Mr Weatherill said. "This is a change that could only occur with significant community support."

Business SA chief executive and former SA Great chairman Nigel McBride said there was widespread support for a change.

"We've had the cringe factor on Virgin flights when they say turn your watch back 20 years, we're arriving in Adelaide," he said. "We've got to align ourselves with the eastern states economic zones."

Mr McBride said changing time zones would have little impact on farmers, who had complained at times about daylight saving and resisted change.

South Australian Farmers Federation policy manager Deane Crabb said farmers supported changes, but would rather move half an hour backwards.

"We wanted to be an hour behind the eastern states and an hour ahead of Western Australia -- we see Western Australia as the boom state," Mr Crabb said.

Seems reasonable, except "international laughing stock" seems a little harsh
Its not as if we're New Zealand.

At least people in NZ have moved past the "is daylight savings a form of witchcraft?" debate that comes up every year in parts of Australia.

The northern parts probably are, I avoid going there. Just more humid and just as redneck. Brisbane for the most part is pretty good. Sushine Coast and Gold Coast have plenty of bogans though.

But I'm moving to Sydney in a few months.

The last few years I've read and heard gems from Queensland such as:

"I don't think we should have daylight savings because the extra sunlight would fade my curtains.

and

"Those people saying we should have daylight savings need to remember the impact the extra hour of daylight would mean for global warming."

That's only Brisbane and Gold Coast, the rest of QLD is a hole. Living in Gold Coast pretty much feels like permanent vacation, way too laid back there lol.

The Gold Coast is pretty shit though, too many wannabe bogans stabbing and shooting up the place. Surfers is alright but can be a bit rough. Good for a visit, could never live there.

I like Brisbane but the girlfriend is in Sydney. Always wanted to live in Sydney.

I've been to practically every corner of Queensland. I've also been to many dozens of shithole New South Wales towns and plenty of bogan suburbs of Sydney. There are bogans in every state and in every capital city, making out that being bogan it is somehow unique to Queensland is dull and hasn't been funny for 50 years.

I've copped my fair share of Tasmanian inbred jokes (despite me being born in Perth, my dad from WA and my mum from Melbourne). It's nothing new but nothing to get uptight about.

To be honest I have felt pretty uneasy walking around at night on the Goldie. The humidity makes people a bit weird up north (including Darwin) and the inland towns are pretty redneck from my experience and others' experiences (all those ppl born and bred QLDers). Every stereotype there is some truth to it.

FWIW I've lived in Perth, Tassie and Brisbane. Been to Sydney and Melbourne lots of times and Adelaide once.

Inland NSW towns are the same, it took about 5 minutes of being out in Dubbo before I was called a faggot and physically threatened. The closest I've come to being stabbed was in Sale in Victoria.

Port Douglas had a better atmosphere than most NSW coastal towns I've been to and that is about as north as you can get.

Every stereotype may have some truth to it, but it's a stereotype that could just as easily apply to nearly any state of Australia.
