i've built plenty and have known of at least 2 which needed both done to get them working

and "compatibility" issues often kick up disabling onboard devices such as sound and video if there are 3rd party devices present, eg sound blaster audigy/xfi, and/or graphics cards

and just so you know resetting the cmos doesn't completely reset everything, to do a COMPLETE reset, it's best to do that, then remove the battery, this will revert the system clock back to it's absolute default and gives the system a completely cleared cmos setup.this is becoming more common on new motherboard so the overclock enthusiasts can reset the cmos and clock settings without fubaring the system clock.

If you remove the battery, the CMOS gets reset. Fiddling with jumpers aswell is unnecessary and a pointless risk if you aren't sure of what you're doing. Make sure that everything is disconnected before you do it. If the power cord is plugged into your PSU, the PSU, depending on your motherboard, will feed the CMOS battery. Simply put, unplug the power cord, pull out the battery, leave it out for 5 minutes or so so that you're absolutely sure that the CMOS has been cleared, plug the battery back in and start up. Not much more to it.

Dear god. Seriously. You're making it sound worse than it is.
5 minutes? ffs. You should have everything set-up and be playing BF2 in 5 minutes.

If there's one thing I've learned over the years I've spent working with computers it's that patience is the most important virtue. It's just five minutes. You're making that sound worse than it is.

I'm having trouble installing the card.  Sadly the only slot my friend has is PCI so it's a Radeon 9250 in there.  We keep switching between the card and on-board and the card has the desktop background but no icons or anything and is usually surrounded by 8-bit generated aqua color.  How do I get it to work right?

Sounds like you have it on dual monitor mode. Go into diplay properties and check.
Sober enough to know what I'm doing, drunk enough to really enjoy doing it

Nvm, we were switching between disabled and enabled and messing around with the settings and when we restarted the comp again with on-board enabled, the on-board did what the video card did whenever we switched the VGA cable between them.  So I thought, maybe the on-board is doing what the video card did, which can only mean.....

To our joy when the VGA went into the video card, it worked.  Now WoW is actually more 3-dimensional for him, lol.
