i've built plenty and have known of at least 2 which needed both done to get them working
and "compatibility" issues often kick up disabling onboard devices such as sound and video if there are 3rd party devices present, eg sound blaster audigy/xfi, and/or graphics cards
and just so you know resetting the cmos doesn't completely reset everything, to do a COMPLETE reset, it's best to do that, then remove the battery, this will revert the system clock back to it's absolute default and gives the system a completely cleared cmos setup.this is becoming more common on new motherboard so the overclock enthusiasts can reset the cmos and clock settings without fubaring the system clock.
