of course i'm not saying it doesn't happen, but to say it is "routinely manipulated" suggests there is some sort of corruption or collusion going on, which i just do not think is conceivably true. it sounds almost conspiratorial. are there sometimes a conflict of interests? of course. are some judges unsuitable to preside over certain cases? of course. this is no different in the us supreme court, for example, where a high-profile judge known to be a strict judicial constitutionalist will rule on a case of importance (with predictable results, if his style of judicial interpretation is anything to go by). it's a human system so it has its faults; a perfect justice system is impossible. as already discussed earlier, though, keeping that imperfect and flawed human element is vitally important. i just wouldn't go as far to say or make out really that there is an endemic or systematic problem.

also, yes most law is laid out in statutes. the point is that common law and cases ruled on statutes by judges w/ attending ratio decidendi and obiter dicta slightly modifies that law and gives a corpus of existing cases to consult for future rulings. it constantly shifts and evolves.

When the CPS is prosecuting a case which is important to them, or more usually to the Police, then the Judge will be hand-picked and briefed on what he's going to do.
Obviously it doesn't apply to run of the mill cases, but it does happen routinely - and they really don't like to be caught doing it.

he shot someone, not exactly the same thing as someone getting sent to the clank for two months because he said something racist on twitter and people didn't like it.

He was cleared and declared to have acted in self defense. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton got involved, and threw him to the media, where he was crucified. Now he is being charged.

Sounds like EXACTLY the same way of running things to me.

At least the OP guy didn't get cleared first, and told no charges were going to be pressed.

Its so laughable its absurd. Just bow out already you complete fucking mong.

At the risk of a derail, I'd like to offer a counter to that:

the sanford police department is trying to make sure they did everything right and i think that's why you saw them pass it on to the state's attorney general. who passed it on to another state's attorney. now that's why we have this grand jury hearing. sanford has a history of racism.

Funny how they talk about Zimmerman's grass stains but do not elaborate on his broken nose.

Mob justice is a part of human psychology, it happens everywhere, it will continue to happen, and its not always a bad thing.

New bill that passed the house and the senate, and Obama signed it. HR347. Being called the anti-protest law by some. The "No Free Speech Zone" law by others. Can make it a felony to protest at or in the proximity of any place where the President, Vice President, or any person protected by the secret service. It also allows the President to give secret service protection to anyone he wants...

So in summary, the president can assign a secret service agent to anywhere, and then protesting there (specifically protected under the 1st amendment) becomes a felony.

Another video I liked less because it felt more freak-out and less factual:

Man that law is whack.

How can the pres. assign someone? Surely there's a process? He can't just ring up and say "yeah, those people protesting at city hall in NYC, the mayor is now under secret service protection, and they're now committing a felony"? (shitty hypothetical scenario but you get my drift)

Five men and a 15-year-old youth have been arrested in East Renfrewshire and Glasgow after anti-Semitic remarks were posted on social network site Facebook.

Almost 50 police officers raided seven addresses after complaints from members of the Jewish community in Giffnock.

It followed a number of offensive posts on a page entitled: "Welcome to Israel, only kidding you're in Giffnock."

The six people arrested were charged with a breach of the peace with religious and racial aggravations.

Hate crimes

One other man was detained and later released without charge pending further inquiry.

Ch Insp Alan Murray, of Strathclyde Police, said: "This was a very complex and protracted inquiry that required assistance from many departments of Strathclyde Police and the support of the procurator fiscal at Paisley.

"I hope it clearly demonstrates that Strathclyde Police will not tolerate hate crimes of any kind.

"It should cause anyone who believes they can get away with this sort of behaviour to think again."

The Community Security Trust (CST), which helps protect the Jewish community in the UK, said: "CST welcomes the arrests of suspects regarding alleged anti-Semitic statements.

I have mixed feelings about the whole thing.

I personally don't agree that this should go under any idea of 'free speech', or that saying whatever you want, hateful or not, should be a human right. This is not about having your views oppressed by your government, because, really, it is a form of verbal violence more than anything else.

Having facebook groups like the one mentioned, shouting 'fuck off to where you can from' (happens a lot) to foreigners in the street are not constructive contributions to a debate, say, regarding multiculturalism, but only forms of mental violence and intimidation that do nothing but cause fear and stigmatisation.

The amount of abuse Arab immigrants got on the street right after the bomb in Oslo (on the assumption that Al Qaida was behind it) was absolutely disgusting. And then of course right-wing politicians talk about how they, the immigrants, need to try harder to 'integrate'... Remarkable.

At the same time, these high-profile, highly publicised arrests of what, really, are minor offences are worrying. A raid with 50 police officers? Pictures of that guy from Wales who called Muamba a 'nigger' on the front page of the Guardian online?

It all seems incredibly random and arbitrary, and looks worryingly like a government trying to make a point of proving that they are 'fighting racism'. It almost sends out an image that these examples are extreme cases, but they are not, at all, and hugely common. How many racist facebook groups exist? So many. So why such a high profile on these limited amount of cases? It ruins the life of those prosecuted for doing what thousands of others their age are doing, in a cultural environment where it is in many cases fostered, simply to score some political pointage.

My point, basically, is that a handful of high-profile racism cases a year is not going to stop racism at all - you have to look at where it is coming from (cultural environment). At the moment the government, with these arrests, are doing nothing but ruin the lives of young individuals.

Right, this is going too far.
A nine-year-old girl who became an internet hit after blogging about her school dinners claims she has been banned from taking photographs of her meals.

Martha Payne, from Argyll, began publishing photographs of her school canteen lunches on 30 April.

Her NeverSeconds blog got more than two million hits in just a few weeks.

But in a post published on Thursday evening, Martha said her headteacher told her not to take any more photos.

Under the headline "Goodbye", the post stated: "This morning in maths I got taken out of class by my head teacher and taken to her office. I was told that I could not take any more photos of my school dinners because of a headline in a newspaper today.

"I only write my blog not newspapers and I am sad I am no longer allowed to take photos. I will miss sharing and rating my school dinners and I'll miss seeing the dinners you send me too."

Martha gave each meal a 'food-o-meter' and health rating, and also counted the number of mouthfuls it took for her to eat.
