Dimastech makes some nice test benches. Especially the anodized red and black looks sweet.

epaper watch, so its a watch that can also show you emails, texts, whose calling, work as a stopwatch, run apps, etc but still last for weeks.  its the fastest raised kickstarter project ever, over $3 million now.

that's $3 mill dollars of idiots that wanna be peering at their watch all morning on the way into work. no thanks. ipads are annoying enough. now every business man is going to be walking around like james bond with a gadget watch. and who the fuck would want to read anything longer than one line of text on a watch-screen? jesus.

It's a cool idea, but with a phone being able to do all that shit for you on a bigger screen, there isn't much point. Shit, I've got a bunch of watches in a drawer collecting dust because I don't bother wearing them anymore.

its a lot easier to look at your wrist than pull a smartphone out of your pocket/etc.  it looks like it could be handy, it even has a vibration feature since i never feel my pocket vibrate from my phone

I always wear my watch.  If they make a water-resistant  to 200M version, I'm in.  Can't take your phone into the pool or sea/ocean.

yeah i agree pulling a phone out of your pocket to look on a much bigger, better-definition screen is so much hassle

it's a dumb fucking idea. another example in the growing case that this 'crowdsourcing' fad is some serious reddit-level bullshit.

Email, SMS and tweets while in the pool or at the beach.  Yes.  Of the many I receive in a day, if a few need replies, I go and get my phone.  But in general, I need to get updates on updates, deployments, migrations, and various other project management details, and only respond back if issues arise.

More so for my wife actually.  As a DoN, she's pretty much 24/7 for emergency issues.

i think there's a comedy sketch in here somewhere for a future television show parodying the corporate-asshole stereotype derived from 1980's yuppies, taken through dom joly's 1990's "hello! i'm on my mobile!" public annoyance to the new 2010's version of the corporate-asshat: checking his business mail and work calendar whilst submerged 6 feet below water in a holiday resort pool. there is no way you need to check this shit whilst you are in the water. get out of the water and check it. jesus fucking christ. you are not the POTUS.

Well, I currently don't have the ability to check status in the water.  So, I do sit it out for hours while a major global deployment or disaster recovery project involving personel from across the world is going on.

even if you eliminate all of the stuff youre personally not interested in, its still quite useful for the gps while biking/running features alone.  i know if im biking having that kind of information at your hands is quite useful and a phone is too bulky to mount on your handlebars.  and getting a standalone unit is just as much, if not more as this thing which has the potential for so much more

okay the biking and outdoor activities thing is a good example. i will admit that having a wrist-device is much more convenient than a heavy iphone or some-such device that needs to be pocketed. +1 there. but still quite niche, nevertheless. as a replacement for phones for commuters/business men/everyday joes in the first-scenario you described, it sounds retarded to prefer to flick a wrist-watch open rather than dive your hand oh-so-far into your pockets. that made it seem entirely redundant.

ilo i really cannot believe that anyone except for a top executive or member of government would need to have status updates whilst taking a swim, sorry. i think you are vastly exaggerating your own self-importance, here. i know loads of driven professionals who go for swims a few times a week and actually enjoy being able to put the phone in the locker and forget about business and memos and reminders and calls-to-make and whatnot. you are really implying that if they devised a watch that could fetch your business email/pager at >200m depth, you'd jump at the chance to get it? get the fuck out of here man, you are not warren buffett.

Find some corporate PM's or DBA's.   You'll be surprised how many DBA's manage databases from the beach, like Hawaii.

As for me, obviously not frequently.  But when some project clashes with some family time, I do manage them.  It's the wireless world.  It's not your 10 years ago Corporate world.

christ ilo literally every single post you make is awkwardly drenched in this wealth-worship and weird aspirational-immigrant style shit. it's painful to read. most of my family are very successful business people. they don't need to check their mails whilst on holiday or at the pool. this whole image of top ceo's sat on a beach reading their emails on a wrist-watch is just some concocted wet-dream of yours. get real man.

oh and just because it's the wireless world and technology has the capability, it doesn't necessarily follow that everyone wants to be connected 24/7. just because i can tweet from the beach, doesn't mean i'm going to. just because i can sign-in to four-square when i go to the theatre, doesn't mean i want to. just because i can check my email at the hospital whilst visiting my dying relatives, doesn't mean i'm going to. know what i mean? some people like to keep a divide between work and life. you seem to have some pretty perverse views of what is impressive and desirable, in that regard.
