My Toshiba's served me well for the last 3ish years. Carried back and forth to college 5 days a week (in a regular backpack between textbooks...wasn't exactly the smartest thing to do but it survived).

I like my Air a lot, but if I had to do it over again I would've gotten a windows based system. There's just too many niggling little programs I need that aren't ported over to Mac OS (because I think I'm the only engineer in the world with an Apple laptop ).
If it's just for fucking around on the web and stuff, I definitely recommend the Air. Expensive, but small, light and powerful.
