My wife and I have worked our ass off to get to where we are.  My wife, Director of Nursing, gets calls in the weekends and at nights on a regular basis.  Back when I was not doing development work, I'd also get calls on some evenings.  And then there are these baby farm families single income households collecting $1K per kid, if not more, from of EIC.
and you could afford to buy 2 ps3's while most peoeple cannot.  fair trade.

thats your decision to buy a house there though
If I lived elsewhere I wouldn't make that $110k. Money is relative. The fact that our income tax system doesn't account for cost of living is the biggest fuck up imo. Someone in Florida can have the same quality of life as me while making half the pay. I'll get taxed at 33% and he'll pay 0. It's fucked up. Salary by itself is just a number, you have to factor in cost of living before declaring that someone has enough

Besides, why should anyone but me decide when I have 'enough'?

i dont understand how you could think because you worked very hard to get where you are (im not doubting that for a moment) and end up being the upper crest of middle class or more and still expect the same tax benefit from a family of 5 earning 40K a year.

What's stopping them from making the same money he does? Nothing.

youre adressing someone who sees 30K a year as a huge pay increase from years before.  And I dont claim poverty.  Im lucky enough to be related to someone who purchased property in 80's and early 90's.  im paying a mortgage rate fixed in since 1986.  Single man living in a 3/4 bedroom two story house, garage and backyard.  im pretty lucky.  I also live beyond my means in a sense that I pay for too many channels and the fastest internet when i dont need it.  but Ive never made a lot of money.

You've got different goals than me, and different expectations.

The only thing I took issue with was you saying that Ilocano made 'enough' money and should stop crying about his tax rate. The difference between someone making $110k and someone making $50k is a nicer house, a newer car, and possibly private school for the kids. It's really not that much. And it's certainly not Bel Air rich where you could legitimately say 'yeah ok, that's enough' (though I wouldn't). That's all.

Have confidence in yourself.  Strive for more.  You've already proven it just by your schooling.  And then get back to me when the paychecks get bigger, as the feds are taking a larger percentage.  It'll really start to hit you around $55K (That was ages ago for me,  so adjust for inflation) when you aren't claiming kids or  larger mortgage related expenses.

no. im saying somone making 6 figures shouldnt expect the exact same benefit as someone making 40K.  especially if theyre buying 5 N64's for the same household.

Is there any benefit at all to filing jointly if you're both working?

They finally fixed the marriage tax.  No advantage either way now.  But you get screwed jointly if one income is significantly lower than the other.  Like those times my wife took time off to take care of the kids on their first years.

Only one can claim each kid, and figure out how to split the mortgage deductions, so, you still have to play the numbers to see what works out best, what with tax tiers and all.

I disagree with you completly.  please dont try to take away from my position by saying something along the lines of "youre not me so there"

ok you make a shit ton of money. good.  you decide to pay more for nicer things thats even better.  you start a family and decide to move to a nice neighborhood and go to private school and send your kids to med school thats outstanding. but thats your decision to spend that much money on things.  Im not telling how to spend your money.  Im not saying you shouldnt buy as many comodore 64's as you like.  I just strongly disagree with your belief that you deserve the same benfits as people with less affluent means.  But please dont start with that "you dont have kids" that could easily turn into a negative response.  I just strongly disagree with your position.  not much you are going to say to change my mind.  not much im going to write to change yours.

i just want to bring up the family of 8 i know in east la.  living in the shittiest part of the maravilla neighborhood.  all the kids went to public school. 4 out of the 6 children went to college.  2 bruins, 2 standford as undergrads.  2 standford grads and one columbia grad student.  one of those standford grads has his JD.  all from a very humble home.  you dont need to live in a nice neighborhood or goto great private schools to become doctors and lawyers.  you get those things because they are nicer and rightfully so.  but c'mon, no tax breaks when yuo could afford to spend money on so much. to me, I dont care about jays tirade thats certain to follow, to me, I strongly disagree.

kudos to them.

How many of them got non-loan financial aid?  Any free rides?

Get good enough grades and achievements to get into Harvard, but have a househould income less than $100K, free ride.  My eldest only qualifies for scholarships at his private high school.  If we made under the threshold, he'd have gotten 100% financial aid, plus the same scholarship.

nah, no tirade. he shouldn't get the tax breaks, but neither should anyone. why should the government give you money for having kids? it's kind of absurd, especially when you're encouraging the people at the bottom by giving them such a huge percentage of their income in rebates. give me a $5k tax credit for raising a kid and i'll thank you, but it won't really impact my decision making. give it to someone making $20k a year and you've given them a 25% raise. who would turn that down? system like that just encourages more kids born into poverty.

$110k isn't a lot of money at all man. It's not in the realm of juggling bills to keep shit from getting turned off on you, but it ain't livin baller style either
i  know its not balling outta control but its no where near the bottom of middle class.
Totally depends on there you live, among other things... I had a friend in college that got offered 3 jobs... One in Los Angeles, one in New York City, and one here in OKC.

The OKC job paid about 1/2 of what the other two did... But after he researched it all out, and figured all his cost of living, and especially his housing costs, he was able to have more discretionary funds by staying here for less money.

$110K/year in OKC is "ballin.'"

Seen it firsthand, Jay speaks the truth here...

Had a friend on welfare that had 6 kids (They planned on 5, but the last one ended up being twins). Between the tax breaks, the welfare, WiC, etc, he "made" more money than me...
