Ex-Clearwater Scientology officer Debbie Cook testifies she was put in "The Hole,'' abused for weeks

Cook said she was held there seven weeks with more than 100 other Scientology executives. They spent their nights in sleeping bags on ant-infested floors, ate a soupy "slop" of reheated leftovers and screamed at each other in confessionals that often turned violent. For two weeks, she said, Miscavige had the electricity turned off as daytime temperatures in the desert east of Los Angeles topped 100 degrees.

The church is suing Cook and her husband for violating the terms of the agreement when she sent a New Year's Eve email urging fellow Scientologists to help reform the church's fundraising tactics and other practices.

FBI agents investigating human trafficking have interviewed several high-ranking defectors from the Church of Scientology who spoke out to the St. Petersburg Times over the past two years about abusive and coercive practices within the church.

I bow to our evil intergalactic overlord Xenu.
I stood in line for four hours. They better give me a Wal-Mart gift card, or something.  - Rodney Booker, Job Fair attendee.

Imagine Waco style raids on Scientology churches. They would shoot back with lazers.

My aunt was harassed by them for a long time. I have no idea who my temperamental (now late) grandpa talked to or what he said, but it came to a halt.

Scientology really has taken over downtown Clearwater.  They are all over the place, and you identify them in an instant.  They are dressed the same, whether they are going to "class" or going around trying to convert people, they have uniforms for every occasion.  They have groups of high school and college age students walking around Clearwater beach asking people poorly written questionnaires, last time I went over there.... it's uncomfortable, to say the least.

But DC-8s can't fly in outer space...

Such is the power of Xenu, but Mormon Jesus would still kick his ass.

DX, you usually are against violence and police/military tactics, but here you are endorsing it... Because everyone knows the appropriate tax on a mind control cult involves a standoff and lots of pointless death. Make up your mind already.

I've never seen that in Clearwater.. tho I really do try to avoid that beach.

I used to deliver to their main office when I worked at UPS, and I will say there is definitely something very peculiar and cult-like in their behavior. Seems a little off from traditional religions. It's like they are a club, and are particular and secretive. To be perfectly honest it creeped me out a bit, and I'm a pretty open minded person.

I saw that back in 2000.  They are pretty easy to pick out.  "Downtown" Clearwater is full of em, but the distribution thins as you get further from their home base there.  I haven't been back since 2004 sooo...

I forgot to mention to people who maybe didnt know, Clearwater is their "world headquarters".

I know some religious sects can be pretty weird and backwards, but Scientology (-ists) act as if they have something to hide.  Made all the more bizarre by the fact you'd expect them to be out in the sticks somewhere, not in the middle of a relatively populated area.. it's like they're trying very hard to be perceived as normal, whereas the amish are just like, F it, we don't care what you all think.
