I call bullshit... You can't have a name like "Fourkiller" and tax OTHER people's violent stuff...http://www.koco.com/news/30349958/detail.html wrote:
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Those wanting to purchase a violent video game could soon be paying extra taxes for them.
It’s a new plan to fight childhood obesity and bullying in Oklahoma.
A state lawmaker wants to put a 1 percent tax premium on every video game with a teen, mature, or adult only rating.
Many violent video games get those ratings.
Representative William Fourkiller is proposing the law.
“Violent video games contribute to some of our societal problems like obesity and bullying, but because they raise a lot of revenue, they can also provide part of the solution,” said Fourkiller.
Fourkiller said half of the money would go into a bullying prevention fund and the other half would go to help get kids playing outside.
A typical $50 video game would cost 50 cents more under the proposal.

i'd give the special fund a year before they start raiding it to make up for shortfalls in the general fund

That name is priceless.
Anyway, yeah, more nanny state shit.

I say we put a tax on taxes and then tax those taxes and apply a management surcharge that is taxed to that.
Some people have a genetic predisposition to being overweight. That group of people will spend almost all of their lives being noticeably overweight. Because they are overweight they will more than likely be bullied throughout their youth. To compensate for their bullying they will sink themselves into violent video games. Unlike normal video games, the violent ones allow them to release all of their pent up rage and anger. Because of this the overweight individual will sink increasing amounts of time into the violent video games. Because they are spending so much time playing videos instead of exercising they will gain more weight. As they get larger the bullying gets worse. As the bullying gets worse they will spend more time playing video games to get a release. Then they will gain more weight and so on. It becomes a viscous circle. A downward spiral.Pochsy wrote:
What in the fuck is the link between violent video-games specifically, and obesity? Am I just to retarded to make the heroic leap in logic required?
It's pretty simple man
There's roughly a 0.000001% chance of that money ending up where he says it will.

Yup, but tax them $0.50 and they will decide exercising is better.Macbeth wrote:

By the way, the typical video game cost is $59.99... That is "about" a $0.60 tax, not a $0.50 so already I can say their research was awful and flawed. If you are going to throw random numbers in there then say "The typical $10 video game will only be taxed about an extra 10 cents."
Next on my problem list: Where does this end? They will start it at 1% and then the next thing you know, it will be getting the same treatment as the "Sin Tax" on Alcohol and Tobacco... What is that up to? 18%?
Next: What is next? R rated movies? Cable? Come on, give us a break...
More politicians trying to look good to the "video games are bad" generation without realizing most voters are now in the "still plays video games" generation.
Oklahoma was one of the stupid states to declare M Rated games as "Pornography" (yes, thank you Hillary, who STILL brings up the hot coffee mod). This got overturned in the supreme court... Hopefully this one doesn't waste that much tax money before it goes away.
With a name like that he's gotta be trolling for sure.
Look, if you're gonna levy a tax on violent video games, just come out and say it's because you need money rather than spout off some random nonsense about it somehow fixing all of America's problems.

(Sorry, it reminded me of those commercials.)
Half to bullying prevention fund, read private equity fund for Rep. Fourkiller, and other half to help get kids to play outside. Riiiiight. So we buying shock collars that zap them if they touch a game controller or what?
They did recently put up an anti-bullying billboard near my work, which I think is stupid, but that is just because I don't think it will make any difference in the world.
It says "Bullycide: Suicide as a result of being bullied. StopBullying.gov"
But we all know that "Bullycide" would really mean to kill bullies. So if anything, it might increase child on child violence. heh.

Did that sign apply to management? Because that's where the bullying problem resides, if anywhere, in the workplace.
Ain't that the truth.
