Joe Paterno dead soon after being fired in an abuse scandal.

Paterno was Penn St. coach for 46 years, the Lions were #1 multiple times, and what people will remember is he shielded a predatory pedophile from prosecution.

edit; i just saw Jay's thread in the sports section.

I'm not defending Joe but his generation did look at crimes like this differently. I hope Sandusky gets the Dahmer treatment.

I am surprised at the number of people that were shocked that he had died. I mean, come on, he was 85.

There is a difference between not making sure someone who raped children is held responsible and cheating on your girlfriend or something. If Joe P. wasn't a famous football coach he would have been branded a scumbag who looked the other way.

But you go to Penn state so of course your would downplay it....

how did Paterno die? was it age, the treatment for cancer, the cancer itself?

no. he died when Penn State forced him from his position, and wouldn't let let leave on his own terms.

Please tell me, with a straight face, that Joe Paterno was going to leave his position willingly.

Joe Paterno was not criminally liable if you believe the story that he passed information on to his A.D. in the Sandusky matter. Who was Joe Paterno's athletic director of the time? Who was the school President?

exactly. without his beloved job title, Joe Paterno died of heartbreak, and i do call that karma.

he HAS been branded a scumbag who looked the other way. joepa was going to leave his position willingly BUT at the end of the season. i know that without a doubt.

i do agree with you that he died of heartbreak, but dear god, it wasn't because he lost his job. if anyone had the same regrets as he did, were that old, and had cancer, they would die too.

regardless, it's kind of miserable to be calling the death of a bystander (yes, i'll admit it) "karma." it just comes off as spiteful to me. what about the other people involved - mcqueary, spanier, curley? sandusky himself?

they'll get theirs. Joe Paterno was 'the Man', the person who could have made an impact in the situation. He valued control over his football program over the impact his assistant coaches actions, and without himself making any disciplinary moves he gave tacit approval to the AD to not persue the matter.

spiteful? no, merely an observation that sports has become the prime mover in todays' universities, and successful coaches can shield predators from
facing consequences that others can't.

Beoheim's assistant at Syracuse will get his too, but that's just another example of my point.
