My current job I got by saying "You know what, I don't give a toss about career progression, office politics etc, this is my productivity record, this is my record of learning new skills and dealing with new technologies etc etc, I need a salary to fund some other things I'm working on, if it doesn't work out no big deal"
That and I was probably the only guy in town with the specific skills they needed - ie being awesome.
