Some members of their state board tried forcing the teaching of intelligent design into their science textbooks and it didn't fly.
Intelligent design wouldn't be discussed at all by the dept of ed. But in Texas...? lol their loss oh well. Thats not a great attitude.

The really sad part is that the states with the worst education stats are also the states where the populations are most supportive of wiping out the DoE and teaching intelligent design.

I would send my kids to a private school that taught real science if the majority of my state felt that way. Or, I would move. The beautiful thing about being an American is that we have 50 nominally independent governments to choose from.

Jay- regarding you're "why do we need the DoE?" question.

Because there should be basic schooling taught. It's the same as any other issue: healthcare, social security, welfare, etc. it's part of the social contract. That's part of what government is for. The fact that people leech off the system is more a reflection on human nature and american capitalism and less a reflection of government in general should be.

I'm starting to think that the whole 'city on a hill' thing is ultimately going to doom our society. It's like we've put ourselves in a fishbowl and the captive audience has both warped our collective psyche and pressure-cooked our government into some kind of Leviathan.

The DoE doesn't set the standard. If the Texas state board had approved ID education it would've gone through. It would've been challenged and overturned by the Supreme Court, but it would've gone through. Stop thinking that our federal government is all-powerful, it's not. That 10th amendment is a bitch.
