Just because the line of thinking is alien to you doesn't make it wrong.
Some members of their state board tried forcing the teaching of intelligent design into their science textbooks and it didn't fly.
It's that whole democracy thing where people are allowed to vote for what they believe in. Not everyone shares your beliefs Aussie, and you're certainly free to never take up residency in Texas if you despise them so much.AussieReaper wrote:

The really sad part is that the states with the worst education stats are also the states where the populations are most supportive of wiping out the DoE and teaching intelligent design.AussieReaper wrote:

Actually jay I don't think you're racist I just think you're a 'let's laugh them because they're different' kind of guy. Especially if they're poorer than you.
Nah, I don't laugh. I'm not a bully. I just don't feel sorry for them.KEN-JENNINGS wrote:

I would send my kids to a private school that taught real science if the majority of my state felt that way. Or, I would move. The beautiful thing about being an American is that we have 50 nominally independent governments to choose from.AussieReaper wrote:

Isn't that pretty standard? One of the primary factors that most Americans look into when looking to buy a home is the quality of the school district. Bad school districts drive people away rather than attract them.AussieReaper wrote:

If you have money, can move, and have a concept of what is and is not a good education. A single black mother living in the Bronx doesn't have any of those and can't just move.Jay wrote:

Not everyone has that option. and it is not the only factor.Jay wrote:

You would rather see a drop in standards because YOU would simply move. What of those who can't?
It's bizarre you would be fine with ID taught anywhere in the US.
Jay- regarding you're "why do we need the DoE?" question.
Because there should be basic schooling taught. It's the same as any other issue: healthcare, social security, welfare, etc. it's part of the social contract. That's part of what government is for. The fact that people leech off the system is more a reflection on human nature and american capitalism and less a reflection of government in general should be.
I'm starting to think that the whole 'city on a hill' thing is ultimately going to doom our society. It's like we've put ourselves in a fishbowl and the captive audience has both warped our collective psyche and pressure-cooked our government into some kind of Leviathan.

Dude, what part of democracy don't you understand? You're a liberal, isn't it what you always tout? Majority rule. If the majority want ID taught to their kids, so be it.AussieReaper wrote:

That's not how it works. Prove I'D is right and there is no problem at all teaching it. Otherwise prove there is no magical tea pot in space or that goes into the curriculum too.Jay wrote:

As ken said, the government has a social contract. Delivery of those services needs to meet a standard.

Don't you agree that ID is a lower standard then what the DoE sets?Jay wrote:

The DoE doesn't set the standard. If the Texas state board had approved ID education it would've gone through. It would've been challenged and overturned by the Supreme Court, but it would've gone through. Stop thinking that our federal government is all-powerful, it's not. That 10th amendment is a bitch.AussieReaper wrote:

You can't campaign on beans and franks and well-wishes. It costs money to buy air time and ad space, pay for offices, staffers, transportation, etc. Or did you think an election fairy magicked all that stuff into being?
