It's technically legal to build your own weapons from scratch, as long as they're for personal use.

So, get some billet 7076 aluminum,
CAD files for an AR-15 lower, AR-10, M1911, Sig 228, or Beretta 92
and borrow a CNC mill.
Tada! AR-15 lower.
Could always do the 80% lower too if you don't have access to a cnc mill.

Rather just spend $200 on a lower.
Or, actually, $982 on a matched lower & monolithic upper for a 6.5x47 Lapua

Uncle Sam already knows my fingerprints, blood type, security clearance, and service record.
Would be silly of me to start trying to be invisible now.

CNC would be fun to prototype new firearms designs on, though...

Yeah the 80% lowers aren't cheap and the jig just adds to the cost, but for someone wanting one off the papers/home built, its a much easier option than starting from scratch. For 223/556 stripped lowers I'd just pick up a Surplus Ammo and Arms lower. They're excellent quality and you can get them for $60 on sale.

I want to do a 308 AR and the mega maten looks . I'd really love a lwrc repr, but damn $$$

For a pre-built AR-10, I'd go with a Lewis Machine & Tool, or Noveske

LMT is one of the real manufacturers that the smaller companies have build their parts.
Continental Machine & Tool is one of the others (civilian brand is Stag Arms)

For myself,
Mega Ma-Ten upper/lower,
JP Bolt,
Krieger barrel,
Geissele trigger group,
Armalite lower parts kit,
Tango Down grip,
Magpul PRS stock.
Probably in 6.5x47 Lapua

But..
Which way to spend a pile of money first?
AR-10 variant + optics + reloading dies + 1000 rounds of Lapua brass + powder/primer/bullets + magazines + slings, etc etc
-or-
Classical Bavarian-style hunting rifle,
Mauser style action,
classical custom wood stock,
S&B optics,
6.5x55 SE,
Bavarian drop-comb buttstock,
Steyr-Mannlicher foreend (or not..?)

-or-
Night vision mount for my AICS stocked 300 WSM + detachable night vision module in front of the scope + Suppressor.

Personally, I'm leaning towards the NV and suppressor.  Just as soon as the Montana Fish & Game figures out that suppressors have been legal for predator (coyote, etc) shooting since November.  Their headquarters hasn't figured it out yet, so... until they get their facts straight, no sense arguing with them.

Mechanically, I've no idea how durable or warp-proof they are.

Aesthetically, I think a nice piece of English or Turkish Walnut is much better looking.

Noveske Gen2 lower
I'm by no means religious and the snipers in our scout platoon are ODA wannabe, assholes.

But I am a Texan who loves Texas.

They missed the point about sniper school being just another 5 week infantry school, eh?
Or that "Sergeant School" is the same length (I forget what they're calling PLDC now..)

Plenty of harder courses in the military.
Getting all hard-faced over sniper school, though.. silly.

In the context of being a Texan, the brand loyalty to LaRue makes sense then.

I'm considering one of their AR triggers too.

I'm still happy with it.  I know you can spend a little less or a lot more on triggers, but I think it was $130 well spent.  It's fairly light and very crisp,  but mostly it's consistent.  I'd imagine their AR trigger groups are pretty good.

Settled on a Geissele SSA Non-Adjustable Combat Trigger. All that's left is glass and a can.
