I've said here multiple times: we get more budgetary bang for the buck from the State Dept than from DoD.
Bang for the buck? How so?
If you look at bilateral agreements and various other relationships that are primarily run through State and USAID, and you compare mil-to-mil relationships with other countries and you then compare DoS and DoD budgets, you'll see what I'm talking about. Much bigger ROI from State.

You think the military has no role in trade? Read a history book. War of 1812. Barbary Coast Pirates (USMC Hymn much?). Sea of Aden. Straits of Malacca.
The difference is the military is now protecting the shipment of manufactured goods from China to America, not the import of raw materials and the export of manufactured goods. That and the importation of ME oil to run your inefficient vehicle fleet and industry.
So having a powerful military is taking you backwards, not forwards.
It is protecting the flow of global commerce through those areas, not just ours. Pull off your "hate America" blinders and try some objectivity.

Fuck it. What am I thinking? I'm talking to Dilbert. Never gonna happen.

No really, how does that help the US when you're mostly importing and killing your own output?

Don't tell me the US gives a shit about 'global commerce' except when its perceived to be in your own interest.

i'm completely behind that sort of thing. would help immensely in england: stop forcing the non-intellectual to go to university as a blind rite-of-passage, encourage them to take up something that will be more profitable to them; stop exporting all of the manual and industrial work out of england so that our economy is dependent on a tertiary sector of work (which is surely the imbalance that forces the proles to go get business studies degrees in the first place from universities that shouldn't even be open, let alone pumping out 30,000 2:2 grads a year), and give 'the yoof' something to do. the entire bottom half of society here in england is a completely wasted resource, or else otherwise stupidly misdirected (much to the detriment of everything else)

although it's easy for germany to successfully run that sort of scheme... considering we've pretty much sold off all of our own manufacturing and industry to them. germany has had lots of EU help in the last 50 years in getting its industry/exports back up, and with us propping them up they are now the biggest power in europe. and they're being stingy bastards about helping us back out. there was a great feature on it in the economist a few weeks back.

What doesn't make sense about that? Because I don't have a graph, it doesn't make sense? Really?

Sorry that you can't grasp basic geopolitical concepts, gents.

James Franco's tired James Dean act got an NYU professor booted from the school last year, after the teacher dared to give the Hollywood hunk a "D" for blowing off class, a lawsuit charges.

Jose Angel Santana said he slapped the "127 Hours" star with the bad grade because he missed 12 of his 14 "Directing the Actor II" classes while pursuing a master's in fine arts.

Santana said he then suffered all kinds of drama -- first from Franco, who publicly ridiculed him, then from his department, which axed him over the "D."

"The school has bent over backwards to create a Franco-friendly environment, that's for sure," Santana, 58, said. "The university has done everything in its power to curry favor with James Franco."

Santana, who is suing NYU in Manhattan Supreme Court for his job back, asserts that Franco, whose career took off after a 2001 portrayal of James Dean, blew off just as many classes in other courses. But the star's other professors at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts still gave him good grades, Santana said.

He suggested that the good grades Franco received were payback to the actor for hiring one of his other professors, Jay Anania.

Franco hired Anania to write and direct the film "William Vincent," which starred Franco, the suit states.

Franco, 33, also wound up teaching an NYU course this past fall on adapting poetry into short films.

"In my opinion, they've turned the NYU graduate film degree into swag for James Franco's purposes, a possession, something you can buy," Santana said.
I am usually highly skeptical of lawsuits like this but knowing how much of a mess our universities can be I have a feeling the professor is probably telling the truth. NYU has been on a prestige dive for awhile now anyway.
Whatever the truth is in this case it is still questionable how Franco got a class teaching anything there. I guess it's just another sign of how prestige and money mean a lot more than education and intelligence in our higher education system.

doesn't the article state he's an enrolled student, not a professor? he's failing class because he's not turning up... he's not "teaching" anything. so how is nyu taking a prestige dive because of it? looks to me like he got failed for not attending a class and the professor caught it in the neck. he did the same thing at ucla as an english major, iirc.

that's not why the professor is in trouble though, is it?

i'm confused, is your problem the professor's dismissal or that franco has anything to do with NYU as an institution?

well i mean who are you to speak for his credentials and knowledge? his attendance is a definite problem, sure, but i hardly think you're qualified to say that james franco can't teach film-making.
