ted that stuff sounds like it's produced by someone with about 6 month's experience using a MIDI keyboard and some free software.

it's unimaginative as hell, poorly produced, the songs are repetitive (more like sketches than actual fully fleshed-out songs).

i know iceland is a few hours behind in terms of time-zone but this shit is literally years behind in terms of music. 2009-era 'dubstep' at best. the sort of stuff that is now being used on chewing gum adverts in america because the fratboys love it so much because that bass is just so MACHO and COOL.

my honest $0.02. even if that tacky overplayed sound is your thing, there are 1,000 other bedroom producers that do it better than this kid. not to mention the actual producers that release on proper labels that far outshine the derivative youtube-generation bedroom crap.

i'd say caspa and rusko's fabriclive was the moment dubstep entered mainstream consciousness... and big first commercial success was magnetic man / katy b sorta stuff, which was still at least rinse.fm based and coming out of south london (i.e. dubstep's home). after that it went to the states and deadmau5 / skrillex picked up on it. but this is why us uk'ers/euros are so sick of the american dubstep fad: that fact you guys are all loving literally was being played in clubs here in 2008/2009.

plus it never was good, just repetitive and unimaginative. i've listened to all kinds of terrible music but never saw the appeal in 'brostep'. it doesn't sound good and it isn't good for dancing/clubs. no idea how it reached such popularity.

i'd say 3-4 years ago at FWD>> and FabricLIVE dubstep was great. even the more aggressive stuff, because it wasn't overdone... most of it was deep, meditative, heavy bass. but it was still definitely very loud and still very intimidating and almost kinda anti-social. it was totally new and totally fresh for dance music and clubs, which had been full of going-nowhere d&b, jungle and minimal techno for a long time. dubstep shook it all up and gave something totally refreshing, with a new swagger. early days dubstep has to be heard in a club to be understood. the problem with dubstep being 'cool' now in today's digital-online world is that most try-hard bandwagon hoppers are listening to dubstep on laptop speakers, or their sennheiser headphones. that's completely missing the point. dubstep was - and still is - good for its original purpose. just one tiny facet and one tiny 'type' of sound (i.e. aggressive lowend bass, or saw-wave oscillator stuff) has been blown up and ran by the major labels and mainstream media circus.

plus, you have to remember that in being hyper-cool and ultra-elite and too-good for 'shitty dubstep', and thinking you are something above it with your 'uk bass' or (the obnoxiously named) 'post-dubstep' or even by involving yourself in the new-vogue for house or uk funky or garage or any other uk-based genre.... that the people you listen to, instead, were all at FWD>> dancing and thinking 3-4 years ago. it all comes from the same very small root. i'd say anyone interested in current dance music should get down to plastic people or fabric sometime, to better understand it. or even the boiler room, if that's your thing.

hurr durr I'm commenting on the shit they have played in clubs in finland for the last 2 years, that is what i can relate to. Never said anything about london or the roots of said music, as if the likes of rusko or nero or bare noize or mt eden ever were "new and exciting and relevant" to the genre anyways.

I go out quite a lot, actually, but it's extremely hard to find a bar or club playing anything better than recycled UKFDubstep playlists from 2008 in here.

rusko was very relevant in the early dubstep circles, actually. so was caspa. that fabric live mix was pretty seminal. it was never on the level of nero or mt. eden, which came much, much afterwards. the problem with rusko is that he found major success with that one sound and has just toured the world doing that same thing for like 4 years. caspa is still actually pretty respected... he cut his teeth at the early FWD's as a regular. and it sucks that you can't even hear any 'good' dubstep in clubs over there - it's like the rest of the world skipped the good phase and jumped on board late when it was just a sugar-coated skrillex type thing.

dubstep's early roots in deep, meditative dubplates was actually really, really good. most of the songs you could only hear if you went to see 'x' dj, cause it was cut to about 20 copies, at most. all white-label and heavy dubs. all vinyl only. long sets in dark clubs with walls of speakers, crowds of people all swaying with their eyes closed. back before it became this huge MUST BE AS HARD AS POSSIBLE AAAH shit. even in 2009 you could walk around not-so-nice parts of south london and walk into normal mid-sized clubs and see people like plastician or kromestar dj'ing. and stumbling into FWD without even knowing what is was on my friends 18th birthday out in london is still one of my top clubbing moments, ever.

i think the major difference was that the old stuff had atmosphere, was actually genuinely dark, had a sort of mystique about it... and, most importantly, it was restrained. you could go and listen to a dubstep set for 3 hours and it would only really get chaotic and crazy for major about 20-25 minutes, at its peak. it always had a soul and a bounce to it. nowadays people have just gone straight for that 20-minute crazy stuff and have exaggerated it beyond any taste, so it lacks the rhythmical pacing and the key restraint that the old stuff had. before it was all about the tiniest, most subtle shifts in the bass frequency, the most incremental pitch/key changes... whereas now the kids are too impatient for that and just want skrillex's brand of mid-range WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMP for 3 hours straight. that non-stop full-on shit must frazzle your brain. no art to it at all.

Couldn't agree more. I've stopping going to the weeklys here in my state because of this. They atmosphere went from cool, bassy, danceable music to agressive 110% madness for the entire night. Dubstep became somewhat of a type of "metal" and it's not the sound I fell in love with. Not only that but most of it is built the same and sounds the same. It's always build, drop, repeat, build, drop, repeat for the entire night. No one focuses on atmospherics, dynamics, minimalism, swing, structure or anything else for that matter.
