Anyone else having this problem? I bind my commo rose/spot button to middle mouse and as soon as I press or hold the button the rose disappears immediately, before I can do anything. From what I can tell nothing else is bound to middle mouse and if I hit the keyboard button for it the commo rose opens and functions as normal.

Maybe I'm the only one nutty enough to re-bind this to middle mouse.

Yeah, you might want to bind it to something else unless you already had it set up that way in BF2.

It's just not easy to use such a multi-purpose button for that: You've got the center click AND the scroll and then some mouses even have a click for nudging the wheel to either side as well for horizontal scrolling.

Or do you use a trackball/old enough mouse to actually have a middle button without a mouse wheel?

I personally use 2 fingers on my mouse (not counting thumb), so using MMB for anything in a FPS is just too dumb...

Am I the only one who uses number keys to switch weapons? Scroll is just too inaccurate and slow...

Nope, I use them too, I even remapped them in the beta to make them as similar to BF2 as possible.  Knife as 1, pistol as 2, main as 3, and I think grenade is 4 and then gadget keys after.  Although I realized you don't really need a key to bring up the knife and grenade as their own dedicated weapons in this game like they were in BF2(although it is cool that they give you the choice to), better to just toggle them for a quick single use with the F and G keys respectively.

yeah I always use number keys, its instinctive now and can switch much faster to what i want than scrolling.

I've actually never had a problem with it. Ever since BF2 I used middle mouse for the commo rose. I find it super quick and easy and it's never interfered with using the scroll wheel.

It might also be because I re-bind almost all my keys...I use arrows instead of WASD.

Floppy I agree about numbers > scroll wheel (except on COD where there's only 2 choices)

Just use the Q for commo-rose. It's a quick ring-finger tap.

Oh snap

Who does that? There's very poor access to the other keys. Not to mention the keyboard's gotta be way far to the left of where your mouse will be unless you enjoy a bent wrist.

Number pad is better for a lefty than using the arrows.

I do that and it's pretty darn comfortable, actually. And no, I'm not left-handed. I've been using that control setup for years now.

EDIT:
OK found these lines within the "PROF_SAVE_profile" file in the "Battlefield 3 / Settings" folder under My Documents:

GstKeyBinding.default.ConceptCommMenu1.0.axis 0
GstKeyBinding.default.ConceptCommMenu1.0.button 28
GstKeyBinding.default.ConceptCommMenu1.0.negate 0
GstKeyBinding.default.ConceptCommMenu1.0.type 0
GstKeyBinding.default.ConceptCommMenu1.1.axis 24
GstKeyBinding.default.ConceptCommMenu1.1.button 2
GstKeyBinding.default.ConceptCommMenu1.1.negate 0
GstKeyBinding.default.ConceptCommMenu1.1.type 1
Let's see what fiddling with these does. "Button 2" is what BF3 currently thinks my middle mouse button is called, while button 28 must be my ENTER key, which the comm rose is currently bound to for the keyboard key. I wonder what that "axis 24" thing is all about, or the "type" entry.

Unless you dedicate one finger to rest on the wheel button, I can see a disadvantage with binding the commo rose there:
You can't quickly spot an enemy while you're shooting at him.
You lose some time moving one of your fingers there and then back to the mouse button. (That is, I'm used to press the wheel button with my index finger. Middle finger I find awkward for that.)

Since BF2 I've I got used to aim at an enemy, press the Q button, followed by a click & hold of the firing button to spot and then releasing Q, continuing firing at the enemy.

I disagree, I've never had a problem quickly spotting while shooting. But anyway, I didn't intend for this thread to turn into an argument as to the merits and faults of my admittedly wacky-ass control scheme. I've got a problem I'm trying to fix and was hoping that someone else out there might use middle mouse for commo rose.

EDIT: interesting, it looks like this may be a known issue:
