Commanders for Libya's transitional authorities say they have captured ousted leader Col Muammar Gaddafi.

BBC wrote:

The reports came after transitional forces claimed control of Sirte, Col Gaddafi's birthplace, following weeks of fierce fighting.

Col Gaddafi is said to be wounded. There is no independent confirmation of the reports.

The colonel was toppled in August after 42 years in power. The International Criminal Court is seeking his arrest.

"He's captured. He's wounded in both legs," National Transitional Council (NTC) official Abdel Majid told Reuters news agency.

"He's been taken away by ambulance."

AFP news agency quoted another NTC official, Mohamed Leith, as saying that Col Gaddafi had been captured in Sirte and was "seriously wounded" but still breathing.

A soldier who says he captured Muammar Gaddafi told the BBC the colonel had shouted: "Don't shoot!"

The BBC's Caroline Hawley in Tripoli says although the capture is unconfirmed, ships and cars have been sounding their horns in the capital and guns are being fired in celebration.

Earlier, NTC commanders in Sirte - about 360km (220 miles) east of Tripoli - said the city had been liberated.

"There are no Gaddafi forces any more," Col Yunus al-Abdali told Reuters. "We are now chasing his fighters who are trying to run away."

There was no confirmation from the NTC leadership.

But fighters in Sirte celebrated by firing in the air, and chanting "Allah akbar" ("God is great").

Interim government forces had been facing heavy resistance from snipers in the city, and used heavy artillery during its offensive. Thousands of civilians have fled.

From what a BBC reporter was saying at the site the rebels claim to have captured him, there were 2 blown up cars and burnt bodies, from the video tho it looks like gadaffi was shot, so im thinking the NATO airstrike in the area on a convoy hit his convoy as they were fleeing and gadaffi some how survived but was captured and shot at the scene.

Some reports stating he was hiding in a drainage tunnel. They have a thing with hiding in holes, these dictators. Should mix it up and hide in a tree.

It's a shame he wasn't captured alive, but good anyway and a big turning point for the country.

Cue the West ruining it.

We were already having some of the cake. Gadaffi was working with the west in our counter terrorism efforts as well as selling us oil. Western business's already had a finger in the pie there with contracts.

Instead of a selfish despot who would work with us we now have? Complete mistake not letting him finish off the rebels.
Shocking
sorry you feel that way

We already had "the cake".

Also:
1. Arab league & UN asked us to intervene
2. Dictators which we supported were being protested against hence the need to save face
3. Many of the insurgents etc in Afghan were Libyans, so it's an area of interest for CT and so on
4. Gadaffi did lockerbie and the west generally wanted to get rid of him earlier due to him being a psycho
5. Streams of illegal immigration into Europe from Libya

That we removed him was a good thing, don't really care what sort of gov. replaces it.

To hell with the Arab league and U.N. The fact is that Gadaffi, despite our history, was working with us. We knew were his moral compass pointed and what he would do and allow. If you think a democratic country will be as cooperative as a despot then you are painfully naive.

He was captured alive according to this yahoo article:  http://old.news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20111020 … a/ml_libya

Footage aired on Arab TV networks showed Gadhafi was captured wounded but alive in Sirte. The goateed, balding Gadhafi is seen in a blood-soaked shirt, and his face bloodied. Standing upright, he is shoved along by a crowd of fighters on a Sirte roadside, chanting "God is great."
Gadhafi appears to struggle against them, stumbling and shouting as the fighters push him onto the hood of a pickup truck.
"We want him alive. We want him alive," one man shouts before Gadhafi is dragged away, some fighters pulling his hair, toward an ambulance.

"they found Gadhafi, wounded in the neck, and took him to an ambulance. "What do you want?" Gadhafi said to the approaching revolutionaries, Bashaga said, citing witnesses".
Gadhafi bled to death from his wounds a half-hour later.

First it says he was wounded and then bleed out, dying from his injuries and then later on a doctor is quoted as saying he died from bullet wounds to the head and chest.   sounds like they captured and then executed him.   no war trial for him.

@anyone who supported Libya

Do you think we should also take action in Syria, Tibet-China, Yemen? All bad people oppressing someone right? Should we do that whole world police thing Euros tend to whine about?
