Is it reasonable to aim a security cam at a card-punching time clock?

This is something we do at my business. The time clock is right next to the warehouse door, and the camera watches this door, the time clock and the office door. A couple of my buddies online, when told of it, have expressed reservations. One even thought it was a bit tyrannical, that it "keeps everyone but the boss honest." So I couldn't imagine union guys, if we had any, would much care for it.

If you don't review it regularly, all it is is mild deterrent. Hooked up to a DVR, it's evidence. We caught someone punching in for other people who hadn't shown up yet not because of the camera but through a surprise inspection of the time cards.

IMO, we pay fairly ($teens/hr based on ability and reliability) and cover the entire day from when they show up to work or the warehouse (whichever comes first) to when they leave the job or warehouse...including meal times but not personal errands.

Aim at door.  Put puncher by door.

Why not? It's not a violation of any right if you ask me. It's a prevention measure... first year accounting really.

My old job we had a thumb / index finger scanner as a means of signing on and off.

The GM was on a salary, and lived at the hotel. All other employees were required to use this system.

I think it is fair. If you are turning up to work on time and leaving when you are meant to, it is unfair if others are getting away turning up late or not at all, and still being paid the same as you.

I've got a security pass to access the lift and subsequent floor that I work on. Has happened at the 3 companies I've worked in so far. But the only ones who watch it are the security guards anyway.

If an employee won't be missed until you check their punch cards, do you really think you need a security camera?

I wonder who voted "no," and why.

So how does the scan card system work for you guys? It would solve the issue of them stamping a card on the wrong spot, but perhaps not the bigger one of them forgetting to punch in or out, or the lesser one of splitting it between a crew on a a long distance job and one that stays local. It might sound cynical of me, but some of our guys, er, forget to put their thinking cap on when they come to work.

We're not big enough for a dedicated security guard, and the camera allowed us to scroll back and verify who stamped in for a buddy this morning. Only caught it because we had the foreman check cards today and found someone who stamped in who hadn't shown up yet.

It does provide us with evidence via DVR.

system works perfectly, all our back doors are set up that if they open with out scanning the fire alarm goes off ....... to get in or out they have to scan to unlock the door, so theres no " stealing of company time "

if they forget their card then they have to find me or the secretary and either one of us manually punch it in the system .... but they can only go and come through the customer entrance/exit and with a camera at the front I know the times

our courier drivers are set up differently .... for contracted jobs ... we allready know the mileage and drivers get paid by the job ... if its a random urgent courier job, then we get mileage before and after and compare it to google maps to make sure the driver didn't take the A - Z route instead of A - B route

We don't have security cameras at my job. I think it's perfectly reasonable to have a camera pointing at the clocking in/out machine. If anybody complains it's because they want to abuse the system.

If I ran my own business, I'd would monitor everything that ever happened inside the building.

Shit i'd even set up proxies to monitor internet usage.

Every packet i would log.

Cameras would be everywhere to ensure no-one is doing anything illegal.

I don't see cameras hurting Morale with how it is in this day and age .... you can't cross the street in a major city without being on 6 cameras, almost all large chain stores have a camera at the front door with a monitor showing you on camera

I have set objectives, which are flexible and change often, I have to deal with problems if things go wrong.
Those are my hours.

Punchcards, video-cameras and so on are for non-creative workplaces.

Getting creativity out people is an art form.

Our company's small enough that our guys do a variety of jobs, including driving. There would be enough manual "punch-ins" by the supervisor to make security measures like that difficult to implement. Besides which, I think the free lunch breaks are a magnanimous gesture on our part.

I agree with the idea, yes. Employees can't really expect to have their performance taken for granted.

Last job I worked, my secretary and I would lounge in my pool all day, and check forms there. Always funny when my employees would come in for meetings/reviews and such.

Would make more sense to simply take a picture every time the punch clock is used rather than running video all day if your goal is simply to log that point in time. But, I have no problem with a camera there. Keeps people honest.

The camera serves the dual purpose of monitoring the front door from the inside as well as watching the clock.

The nice thing about having video footage (other than that) is that we can see people as they linger around the thing. There's less chance of their features being obscured from video than there is from a snapshot. I was surprised when some of my buddies expressed reservations about the method, which is why I brought it up here.
