if you like beer, you may want to try scotch - it's a barley based whisky. vodka goes well with anything, and rum is kinda sweet.
liquor is subjective, try different ones til you find what suits you.
and always realize one shot = one full beer, if you get hammered on ten beers, it won't take but a pint or so to get you there . . .

if it's a scotch (blended or single malt) i like to pour three fingers over one ice cube. as the cube melts, the water opens up the whisky without diluting it.
i never shoot vodka, it's more a mixer. but rum and tequila (while you can make all sorts of wonderful mixed drinks with them) i like to drink neat, from a frozen glass.

aye, it's made from wine grapes in a region of France - made like distilled spirits than wine though.
