We're talking about guns, not the cold war.

The fact is there has been no innovation since 1911, something the US military apparently agrees with since the adopted the Beretta.

yes, indeed, because what is a military without super innovative sidearms?  or maybe we just bought the cheapest hunk of 9mm eurotrash shit we could get because, oh yeah, military sidearms serve nearly no purpose.

Should let soldiers choose if they want one or not, and if they do they have to buy it. There's no restrictions on what you can purchase.

The M9 went through pretty exhaustive testing IIRC, there were cheaper guns available too.

erm massive logistical problems

imagine having to supplying 7-8 different types of ammo in the field, just for pistols

Purchasing a non standard caliber should require you to purchase your own ammo. Just food for thought.

then it would encourage soldiers to be lazy and not practice with their sidearms?

Or just use pistols that use .45 ACP and let the operators decide what they want to use.

Hrm, okay.. fine...

I want THIS, in 12ga
(Or, something akin to an MP5K layout, chambered in 12ga, with an (obviously) slightly longer barrel)

It is impractical to allow a regular army to arm itself with an irregular assortment of firearms.
Supply issues, ammo issues, training issues, etc etc.

Special Operations types, however, are another story.
They spend enough time and energy on training that a personal pistol would work for them.

Then again, with that much time and training, one could become extremely proficient in a unit-assigned weapon.

And, with Special Operations training tempo, they've probably figured out which pistols are accurate and reliable.
So, you're back down to one or three unit preferred pistols again.
Cream rises to the top, so to speak.
No need for expensive General Officer & contractor driven weapons trials - go ask the SOCOM groups "Hey, you all have put a few million rounds downrange.  What works, and what is trash?"

Went shooting with my dad and best friend today.

We sighted in his new Traditions muzzle loader.  That thing hits fucking HARD and FLAT. Not to say recoil was bad, but that slug just decimates whatever it hits.  Then we had fun with the our AK's, my Glock 17, my buddies S&W .40, and his .357.  Good day!

No.  Just no.

There are PLENTY of US pistol designs.
The M9?  There are lots of reasons, some questionable, why that was chosen.

Buying a handgun tomorrow (hopefully, if I have time that is)

Not to sure which one I'll get. Something cheap no doubt.

IIRC they were shit and all my friends who used them hated 'em.

Edit: and don't fix what isn't broken. the browning M2 .50 has been around for over half a century. the 1911 and browning are still around for a reason.

Pro: M9's are very reliable, easy to break down, easy to clean, easy to maintain.
