More egregiously, despite promises from the organization to use local unionized labor for the project, the sculpture was completed using workers imported from China working for nothing but “national pride.”
...
The fact that the Chinese workers were not being paid was only discovered when the BAC sent an investigator to determine if they were being exploited. While they were given room and board and hoped to be paid upon returning to China, using free labor to construct Kings monument seems to fly in the face of what he stood for.
Designed and built by the Chinese.

The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s family has charged the foundation building a monument to the civil-rights leader on the National Mall about $800,000 to use his words and image — and at least one scholar thinks that Dr. King would find such an arrangement offensive.
We had to pay for the privilege to set up a memorial.

And look at it

Why did we let the Chinese artist depict our symbol of non violence and peace in a fascist pose? Seriously you could swap out MLK with Hitler or Stalin and it would fit into the design and pose of this statue.

This statue is a national disgrace and should be torn down and rebuilt with American labor and designed by an American artist. The MLK family should get nothing. Also they should make MLK not look.like a black mussolini.

Is that it finished? I would think they'd have him with more approachable body language. Looks pissed off. Jokes on us I guess.

Paint is silver and he'll look like he's encased in carbonite.  And yea... He does look pissed.  Why the fuck did china get to make it?

I think it is a fitting tribute to a man who was nothing like his public persona.

It was built under false pretenses, just like MLKs public image.

I think the message has long since outgrown the man's personal habits. I don't begrudge him a statue, but I doubt he'd have approved of this farce.

Too bad he's been hijacked by the political left as a bludgeon. I grew to resent the mandatory black history month at school, not because I thought it was all invalid, but because I was tired of the "white people did this; even if you didn't do any of it, don't you feel horrible now?" message.

I don't like it just because there is no such thing as black history. There is only American history. THe good the bad and the ugly like it or not, has made our country what it is.

I think it is beautiful.

It has more of a thoughtful look to me.

I also think when you give public speeches, your family is not entitled to a dime to quote you. Giving them money is like saying they own his message.

That's only half-truth. American "black history" is American history. This doesn't make it non-existent; only one part of a whole. The special attention it gets is what bothers me when much of it could be incorporated into regular history.

Good god.  What a collosal fuck up.  I saw in TIME or some other magazine, its also much larger then either the Lincoln or Jefferson memorials, in terms of height.

I wouldn't be surprised if they hired James Earl Ray to assassinate MLKJ just so they could profit from his legacy.

Don't care who made it or how they were paid. But it looks unfinished, the pose is terrible and the expression is cranky.

Paying the family for a quote is also pretty ridiculous.

I'm really not one for tradition... but that statue sticks out like a sore thumb among the other monuments. A half carved chunk of stone? Come on.
