As for what I want from it, there are a few things that stick out when it comes to what I miss from my current situation: a larger aperture, and more zoomz. Also better at shooting with High ISO's/better at drawing in light/whatever, but I guess that's a camera body/house thing?
What do you shoot most often or would like to shoot the most? Also as far as "more zoomz", do you mean greater telephoto, or just a bigger range?

If portraits: either 50mm 1.8 ($100), 50mm 1.4 (~$400), or 85mm 1.8 (~$400)
If macro: try reversing rings and extension tubes first (~$15), then consider a 100mm macro (~$470)
If landscapes/wide angle: Sigma 10-20 4-5.6 (~$450), or Tokina 11-16 2.8 (~$750), or Canon 10-22 3.5-4.5 (~800)
If birds/sports: Canon 55-250 4-5.6 ($250)

If you want the same range as the kit lens, check out Sigma for a zoom with similar range, the Canon variants are way out of your price range

I definitely shoot objects/landscape the most, never shoot portraits and haven't really tried macro. But if it's only $15 to give that ago, then, well, y'know.

Anyways, where'd you find that Sigma 10-20 4-5.6 for $450? Its MSRP is $740, and amazon UK sells at around $585..

How are these multipurpose lenses? http://www.sigmaphoto.com/shop/multipurpose-zoom-lenses

And also, how do I find out how much zoom (ie, what they call 8x or whatever on compacts) the camera has? I always assumed it was the focal length, but some of the multi-purpose ones are up to 250mm which sounds large..?

I got mine used, sorry, forgot to add that.

You definitely want to stay away from multipurpose lenses, they are slow, soft, and make you lazy. Primes are most often the way to go because they are fast, sharp and force you to compose creatively (and have better color/contrast).

To figure out zoom factor, divide the larger focal length number by the lower focal length number. Eg: 18-55: 55/18=3x. This is only the range, not the actual "reach"

EDIT: Get this for your 18-55. Once you get it and have questions, post them here cause reversed lenses can be rather tricky to use

Thats pretty cool. Its like inception, art within art

And sharp with multi-purpose lenses is relative. Most of them are 6.3 at the long end anyway, and the corner sharpness is usually awful, along with distortion, poor contrast etc. Doesnt mean they cant be used to take good pictures, it just wont make it easy to take good pictures

RIP, 20D.

i've read some nice reviews of the T3i, it's basically a 60D at a nicer price . . .

Video would be sweet (along with the sensor) with the T3i, but I think the ergonomics and controls would drive me nuts... Its out of my price range as well.

Kmar you have a 40D right? How do you like it?

I have an xti and it's age is becoming more and more evident. Especially with night shots (noise). However, if I'm going to upgrade .. it's going to be a full frame. The (5d) Mark III is supposed to be around the corner. Maybe that will drive the Mark II's price down .

Derp, I was thinking of McMinty . XTi to 5D2 would be one hell of an upgrade. Itll be interesting to see whats new in the 5D3

Yea if you're going to upgrade make it count.. since so much is done in post. I put more money in glass than I do the body..lol.

For now its in a shallow rice burial haha. Im drying it out just in case theres a small chance of it still working.
Have you checked it yet? gah the suspense*

Yeah. It half works; AF system and shutter seems to be fine, but its having problems with writing/reading and freezing with the CF in there. Probably going to have to buy a new camera anyway. I cant shoot all the time with a half working camera

I have been wanting an upgrade for a while though, so its not the worst thing to happen. I may bite the bullet too and get a 60D or 7D (a friend might be able to get me a screaming deal)
Go 4 it. and get the old one repaired. DUAL POWWWER
