Valve announces next Counter-Strike

Next Gen Console, PC, and Mac Release Targeted for Early 2012

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO).

Targeted for release via Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam (for PC and Mac) in early 2012, CS: GO will expand upon the team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when it was launched exactly 12 years ago (CS beta 1, August 1999).

CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more.

"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," said Doug Lombardi at Valve. "For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac."

CS: GO is being developed by Valve in cooperation with Seattle-based Hidden Path Entertainment. The title is targeted for release in early 2012 and will be playable at this year's PAX Prime and Eurogamer Expo 2011.

What can I say? It's been a long time coming! Just today news from the VALVe office has emerged as our own Craig "Torbull" Levine has taken the trip down to supposedly "help develop" the new version of Counter-Strike. Counter-Strike:Global Offensive (CS:GO). Is this VALVe reaching out to the community, recognizing the competitive community?

News first arrived about the new version on the ESEA.net Facebook Page, saying:

"Counter Strike: Global Operation... More info tomorrow!"

Jess Cliffe, one of the original creators of Counter-Strike, was seen posting on the SteamPowered forums, saying "Global Offensive."

Should be interesting. They're actually working with top CS(S) players to tweak the game, so it won't be another boring game with no recoil or bullet deviation. (Looking at you, newer CoD series)

Only thing is...the competitive TF2 community was hoping to get some growth after the whole F2P thing, and then Valve hits us with this. :<

I think that those kind of super operator warman sassealsspetznaz elite special forces subtitles are kind lame and overdone and I am saddened that Valve is not above them.

Also Hidden Path (aka, the real devs) only other game to date is a tower defense game. I don't know what that will mean for the quality, but you guys might want to know.

I doubt all the top players they're working with are going to allow them to fuck it up.

Besides, I think Valve has finally caught on to how big "eSports" is getting. Of course this probably means they'll lose the sales to all the CoD leet260noscope kiddies...but that's a good thing.

Looks the same, really. I find it funny how they show clips of CS and CS:S in half-size low res, because if they didn't the game would look too similar.
