S&P is a glass-half-empty outfit. Not that I'm dismissing concerns about the US economy because of it...

I guess they have to make up for the stellar job they did in the opening acts of subprime.

Part of their analysis is based on (paraphrasing) "republicans are against increasing government revenues." Those analysts should be fired, as it was made abundantly clear during the debates that tax reform to increase revenue was something both sides wanted...just the nature of that reform was under debate.

Fucking morons at S&P.

no surprise here. fucking morons at s&p? how exactly is america's credit rating at AAA quality right now? your government are morons for trying to desperately lobby s&p to save a rating drop that any other nation's economy would suffer in a flash in the same circumstances. america is no longer a AAA credit supplier. will it actually affect global markets and bonds etc. much? probably not. but you can't have your cake and eat it.

Look at other nations with AAA ratings. Look at their debt-to-GDP ratios.

This is politically-driven bullshit. Nothing more.

I hope the dems and reps are proud of themselves today, I was afraid their petty bickering would lead to this and it did

It should also be quite the eyeopener for anyone supporting the tea party movement, they especially have a significant part in fueling the fire!

Hopefully your politicians will take the threat of yet another downgrading the next 12 - 18 months seriously enough to end their petty differences and start doing what's good for America on a long term basis ...

How is it the tea party's fault? They wanted cuts that would've staved off the downgrade. They want a balanced budget amendment. I don't get how you could blame them at all.

Tea party doesn't play the media game as well. That's why it's their fault. Duh.

Yeah I'm sure they know a lot less about it than you do. And why would it all of a sudden be politically motivated? Because they don't like Obama?

Did you read the report?

Did you read Kmar's recent post?

Have you been paying attention for the last month?

It's simply because they will not compromise, they will have it their way or not at all and this was not a very good time to be unreasonable ... they were willing to risk the credit rating going down a notch and they got that now didn't they?

Without the tea party both dems and reps could have reached an agreement earlier thus maybe have kept the AAA rating.

The tea party was holding the whole thing up over a balanced budget amendment. Even if they had passed a balanced budget amendment it would not have gotten through the state legislators in time for the Aug. 2nd deadline.

You can't tell me they were being serious or going into this in good faith...

I'm not reading 8 pages of something that can be concisely summed up in a news article. And yes I read Kmarions post. They made an error, but decided to stick with their conclusion anyway. How does that make it politically motivated? It seems pretty clear that given recent events where you came so close to a default, people are quite naturally going to be more hesitant to loan you money. Hence, a ratings downgrade.

I'm not sure that without the TP involvement, an agreement would've been reached any earlier. There was intransigence on the dem side regarding cutting spending at all to begin with. They wanted to fix things with tax increases primarily and offered only token, meaningless spending cuts...which would've resulted in the same downgrade, as the end game did not result in a low enough debt in the outyears.

So you think there wouldn't have been a downgrade if  the Republixans had just fallen in line behind Obama and approved the debt ceiling increase without making it an issue?

Quite possibly. It stands to reason that people aren't going to be willing to loan money to a country that came so close to a default. You were always going to need to raise the debt ceiling, so raise it, and then sort out the details of cuts after that. That's my issue with the Republican party. They seem perfectly happy to fuck America/the world over if it means they get to be right.

The dems are the ones having to swallow the biggest camel in these negotiations ...

But no use shifting blame back and forth, the credit rating drop is fact and your politicians needs to adress that and come up with a long term solution hopefully based on a balanced budget ... the party is over, time to clean up and everyone should do their part!
