Some Dutch news website said it was a handgun covered in a piece of cloth or concealed by the guy's clothing or something. Pretty hard to mistake that for a fishing pole.

normally it really means handgun here (as in pistol or revolver).
First they said 'firearm'and later they called it, literally stranslated, a handgun. so who knows, they could mean anything with that. So now i'm assuming it was a rifle.
