Put everything you've done workwise in it, the more the better, it will show you've not just sat around and the more experience the better.

And 'outsourced' doesn't simply mean sending the job to India. It could be replacing the IT department at your office and bringing in part time consultants in your stead. It could be ditching you and your ever rising pay and benefits for a fresh out of college kid that will work for half. These things happen every day in the IT industry. IT guys are considered a luxury and non-essential and are the first to get cut when profits sag.
And it's not like Cam could ever be a part time consultant be- oh, wait. He could.

And it's not like Cam would ever be a fresh out of college kid that will work for half be- oh, wait. He could.
It's not a good career path.
Maybe if you take this "i want to be like a postal worker and sit at one job all my life mentality and collect a pension" mentality, then I agree it is not. I think your understanding of the field is a bit dated imo.

The top pay for IT consultants in NYC is about $50k/yr. That's barely a liveable wage here.
Not sure what you consider an IT job really, but we have had this conversation already You mean entry level?
Programming, networking and security. Maybe it's different where you are, but the market is flooded here by people that chose IT degrees during the dot com boom. My dad was a programming consultant during the late 90s, was making 100-150k a year and then boom, the industry turned and they figured out any college kid could perform the same task for $15/hr. The market has never recovered and rhere are hundredss of people applying for every open IT position, even shitty call center jobs.
I don't know I work in a area with a far lower cost of living and average wage. I was making more than 50k on my first job 12 years ago. Not sure what this turn in the industry is you speak of.

Find a different field to go into. IT is not stable and you are likely to get outsourced. I know you're an arrogant fuck and think you know everything but there are millions of people just like you with the same skillset who are willing to take a wage even beneath a Scotsmans. Every kid that plays too many video games wants to be in IT because he thinks he will be able to play at work. That is your competition. You are not special. You'll blow me off, but this is the best advice you'll ever get: do not go into IT.
Won't be long till Gurdeep is doing your job too...

I figure if my field ends up getting outsourced to bumfuck nowhere I'll just open a bar.
Nah, my job is protected Like lawyers, engineers have set up a bunch of hurdles to clear before you're granted entry. My job is safe.
what galt is saying camm is get a degree in english literature because nobody from the third world will ever be better at it than you

then you can join an organisation, train up, and get them to pay for a master's or some other corporate bullshit to get up a few more rungs

I agree.

I have been in on a number of hiring and promotion boards, and I can say that our director is very serious about wanting experience over education. He would hire someone with two years of apprentice work actually doing the work they would be doing for us over someone with a degree or cert in that field.

Probably a stupid question but

On a CV does it look better if you worked one job continuously over a period of time or multiple jobs in different fields? (5 or 6 Years in one place vs 2 in one, 1 in another, 6 months in another, 1 and a half in one etc.)

I'm guess the one continuous employment looks better than someone hopping around but I could see how the the different fields could also be a benefit...

I'm talking about entry level corporate btw not IT specifically.

Depends on the job and who is hiring, some conservatives like a steady track record, others think that if you've been in the same place 5 years you're an idiot.

6-12 months is a little short, unless you can prove you're moving onward and upward and have done good work for your employers.
You'd need good references to back up short stints.

Depends on the role you did within those companies.

If you were doing some menial work for a long period in one position, it looks like you don't have much motivation. If you were to list a number of roles/responsibilities in that one company that you held over the years, it looks much better.

in the current graduate job market it's actually pretty advantageous (as well as actually fun!) to temp for a number of companies for several years. long-term contracts and serious graduate placements are pretty rare nowadays, everyone is too cautious and financially strapped to employ new graduates on fast-track programmes year upon year (excluding some of the ftse 100 companies). temping is a great way to move around, see some of the world, experience different fields/companies/cultures, and build a decent resume. i personally intend to temp for a while as soon as i finish my higher-education, if only to help me decide what i want to do (and because why spend 2-3 years financing slave internships when you can just temp on 6 month contracts, anyway...) my only obstacle is securing accommodation for this period, but it shouldn't be too hard.

by the way i have NO IDEA why you tech-savvy IT guys are not producing CV's/resumes on Adobe InDesign. what excuse do you have? i'm a literature student that should be computer-allergic in comparison to you guys, and even i have a nice sleek indesign resume. you really want to apply for a job in IT or the tech sector with a CV laid-out on microsoft word like a letter from your grandmother? okay, have fun with that. standards are a little higher now.

here's the top google result for 'indesign cv', just as a fyi for what you should easily be capable of producing (and indeed, should try to produce)

I've read a few CVs. I like simple formatting, no colour and no pics, definitely portrait format.
If they could all be the same I'd be happy.

Probably the art world is different.

There's nothing wrong with temping, provided as AR says you're not doing wholly menial crap, you need to be learning, if you're not then move on.

who would put colour and pics on a CV? 2-colour layout for letter paper is alright... i.e. dark reds/dark blues to offset the cream paper.

but otherwise indesign is just used for nice formatting and a better, professional layout. microsoft word is just bollocks.
