I wore a light coloured sports jacket, luckily as otherwise my parents would not have been able to pick me out across the hall.

everyone was encouraged to wear dark formal attire. the gowns have like chocolate/gold details on the back for the BA's. a few people went in grey. a few in pinstripe. adventurous motherfuckers wore waistcoasts. but mostly all dark, yeah. we had a formal procession around the building and into the chapel and picture gallery, accompanied by a choir and honorary fellows and shit. so it's very serious. batman at the very least. i woulda liked to just chill in a casual blazer and oxford shirt, too, certainly would have been more comfortable and woulda brought my core-temps down by about 10 degrees c.

the princess chancellor also had like 5 of these windsor guards that were playing bugles or brass instruments w/ little flags hanging from them of some description with massive cavalry helmets and they were marching around and all sorts of shit. it was cool. definite hogwarts vibe at roho.

definitely no-no to wearing a belt with a slim-fit suit. don't put horizontal lines if you want to go for a slim, tight-fitting look. makes you look bulky and divides the look into awkward angles and dimensions. want everything flowing down and kept neat if you want to carry off a tight-tailored suit. belt or suspenders if i was going for a regular dress-occasion, yeah. but not with that huge gown!
Even with a slim fit i would still wear a belt, but yeah, the gown does make wearing one look silly.
I like slim fit, but thats probably because it suits me well with my build.

There were no rules I remember, smart attire only. My fellow graduates kept asking if I'd read the rules "yup, just says smart, gowns optional".
Glad I went to an upstart college TBH.

you went to an "upstart college", dilbert? i thought you were an imperial alumni? mostly all university of london degrees are formal like that, afaik. kings, queen mary and university college are pretty much identical.

i guess you science/maths geeks have a lot less pomp and grandeur so it makes sense that IC would keep a pretty err, scientific way about things.

gowns are NOT optional here (nor is formal dress) and they cost about £40 for the day to rent. buying them cost like £250! like who is ever going to wear a grad gown in their life outside of a ceremony.

we have weekly dinners in formal dress too, not-optional, also. oxbridge take their exams in full regalia. don't think so for dinners... maybe academic ones or special college occasions. we have formal dining hall once a week here, too, and it's all serious business. hear hear! tinkle tinkle. do hold your fork like a lady that has actually been to finishing school, dahling! oh no that's not the vichysoisse spoon at all!

Formal Hall or Formal Meal is the meal held at some of the oldest (arguably with a strong academic tradition), universities in the United Kingdom at which students dress in formal attire and often gowns to dine. These are held commonly in the colleges of, for examples, Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and St Andrews, as well as the The University of London (for example, Royal Holloway) and Nottingham.

my university was formed in like the 1840's for nothing but upper class bitches.

one of our famous alumni was one of those early suffragette bitches that threw herself under a horse out of protest and died.

70% of the people on my course are fine-ass posh totty bitches.

i am just a bit glad that women attend university
