full time boarders have to get up for like 7am for services and often aren't done with extra-curriculars until 5-6pm... then there's homework and preparation tasks for the following day's lessons... and so on.andros wrote:
holy shit you were in school for that long? what kind of school did you go to?
ah, i'm not doing any extra-curricular activities or anything and i don't hang out that much with people after school and i barely do my homework.Uzique wrote:

i thought you and shifty were homeschooled.
yeah i really can't comment on our education system, but yeah it could be worse i guess lol.Uzique wrote:
i've read a lot of criticism about the us education system and the quality of college education but that's an argument for another day...
i think home-schooling should be outlawed tbh
i don't really like acknowledging your existence, but here goes my thinking;andros wrote:

and why should home-schooling be banned? freedom thing ya know, although the parents/program should at least teach the kids core info.
and for some it's a good option, ie. i would hate to go to my school if i had a major physical disability or something.

admittedly i have this preconception that all homeschoolers are warman clones, i don't know any in real life.

it's not a freedom thing though, it's the complete opposite: the parents make a major decision about their own child's education and wellbeing. teachers are teachers in schools because they're qualified and trained to bring up young people with core skills and knowledge-- that's their job. a parent that takes it upon him/herself to educate their child is just taking living standards way back to the middle-ages. the child has literally no say in the matter because he/she is too young and too immature to know better. where's the freedom in having your opportunities in life severely retarded by being withdrawn from basic education? yippee kiy yaaaay
I disagree. One on one time is vastly more important to child development than sitting in a classroom. It's why tutors exist and why private schools emphasize smaller class sizes as selling points. Classroom education is forced to move at the pace of the slowest child to the detriment of the quicker kids. School systems are ass backwards and do more harm than good.Uzique wrote:
well, logic would suggest that unless your parents are former teachers or at least degree-level in the core subjects, they're not going to be as well educated or prepared as an actual teacher. actual teachers, in state-education, are also free and plentiful. i'm guessing some stay-at-home-mom or former business woman isn't going to be as capable of doing a good job of teaching as... uh... the professional teacher. all the self-help books and home-textbooks in the world aren't going to change that fundamental disadvantage in skills.
classes can be (and are) tiered you know?Jay wrote:

I like how teachers teaching suddenly becomes politicians teaching in the eyes of the 'government r bad' crowd.Jay wrote:

Your argument is over who is more fit to make decisions for the kid, society (politicians and bureaucrats) or the parent. I'm gonna go with the parents.
