full time boarders have to get up for like 7am for services and often aren't done with extra-curriculars until 5-6pm... then there's homework and preparation tasks for the following day's lessons... and so on.

nah, but i'm probably gonna do my work at home again this year.

last year i went to school and the year before that (9th grade) was the first year i did my work online, it was alright i guess. teacher environment is better for the extra input and social stuff.

it's pretty easy stuff anyway just like at the high school here. read shit for history and answer questions, essay here and there for english and other shit, bla bla.

i've read a lot of criticism about the us education system and the quality of college education but that's an argument for another day...

i think home-schooling should be outlawed tbh

I only know one person who was homeschooled and she's turned out pretty well, actually. Has social skills and friends, graduated with honors this year, but that might be an outlier. Surely a poor teacher would exacerbate any inherent problems with homeschooling.

i'd be interested to see a study (if it already exists, i can't be bothered looking) on test results for home vs regular schooling. even more interesting would be a longer study comparing how each group fares in the 'real world' (workplace/socialising etc).

yeah i really can't comment on our education system, but yeah it could be worse i guess lol.

and why should home-schooling be banned? freedom thing ya know, although the parents/program should at least teach the kids core info.

and for some it's a good option, ie. i would hate to go to my school if i had a major physical disability or something.

i don't really like acknowledging your existence, but here goes my thinking;

if there's evidence that on average (by a noticeable margin) homeschoolers suffer academically and socially compared to a traditionally educated individual it should be banned, or restricted in some way. we (the western world) educate people about various dangers to health (smoking, drinking, drugs etc), i'm not sure why education should be any different.

it's not a freedom thing though, it's the complete opposite: the parents make a major decision about their own child's education and wellbeing. teachers are teachers in schools because they're qualified and trained to bring up young people with core skills and knowledge-- that's their job. a parent that takes it upon him/herself to educate their child is just taking living standards way back to the middle-ages. the child has literally no say in the matter because he/she is too young and too immature to know better. where's the freedom in having your opportunities in life severely retarded by being withdrawn from basic education? yippee kiy yaaaay

well, logic would suggest that unless your parents are former teachers or at least degree-level in the core subjects, they're not going to be as well educated or prepared as an actual teacher. actual teachers, in state-education, are also free and plentiful. i'm guessing some stay-at-home-mom or former business woman isn't going to be as capable of doing a good job of teaching as... uh... the professional teacher. all the self-help books and home-textbooks in the world aren't going to change that fundamental disadvantage in skills.

Children are property, get over it.

Your argument is over who is more fit to make decisions for the kid, society (politicians and bureaucrats) or the parent. I'm gonna go with the parents.

I disagree. One on one time is vastly more important to child development than sitting in a classroom. It's why tutors exist and why private schools emphasize smaller class sizes as selling points. Classroom education is forced to move at the pace of the slowest child to the detriment of the quicker kids. School systems are ass backwards and do more harm than good.

I don't get the whole "dump them all in the same class" mentality

in holland kids get divided into seperate classes when they go to high school ranging from going to university level, to probably not going anywhere level. Most high schools only teach some of those levels too, so there really is nobody holding you back.

I like how teachers teaching suddenly becomes politicians teaching in the eyes of the 'government r bad' crowd.
