It was the dumbest fucking thing ever taught in elementary school. I agree with you DF, that was definitely the worst part of the SAT. I think on the SAT IIs I just wrote it in 'fancy' print. I never use cursive otherwise, even my signature looks like one a doctor would have.

When I want to write something that looks very legible (like in a birthday card as Shifty said) I just write in print very slowly and it comes out looking fine. I think good handwriting should be taught, sure, but it can be print. I knew a girl in HS who had amazing print handwriting, I mean it seriously looked like a computer font. And honestly I think some people just have a knack for good handwriting and others don't.

My cursive writing looks far better than printing.  Why learning cursive is apparently so difficult is beyond me.  Abandoning it because of technology use seems silly tbh.

Sloppy handwriting is made sloppier and quicker through practice. Neat handwriting is made neater and quicker through practice.

It wasn't difficult for me to learn, but I never used it again, even for college note-taking. The best use I can think of for my cursive is for handwritten letters. Then again, I could also write them with glue, macaroni and sprinkles...you know, some of the more important skills taught in elementary.

Use it for note-taking...but it almost always devolved into a mish-mash of print and cursive, which just flows easier for some reason.

What will they teach in its place? Is there something that isn't being taught because cursive is?

I think people should continue to teach/learn cursive. Whenever I write a thank-you card, or a get-well card, heck, any card; I want it to look nicely written. If I'm writing notes down I use cursive because I can write much quicker.

I only use print to fill out forms or official documents.

Cursive is just really sloppy sometimes, that's the only downside I see to it.

edit: I have my own version of cursive, as many capital letters don't have connections, they slow me down, so I just invent a way to connect them. Good examples are the capital P and Q.
I don't think that capital letters should be linked anyway.

They should teach greek letters. They're so much more efficient. Stupid Romans.

I think it should still be taught.  Penmanship is important.  Not much else to say about it.

But penmanship =/= cursive.  I don't feel the need to write love letters circa 1785 Jane Austen, so I have no need for cursive.

It helps you develop your own style and personality when it comes to penmanship. I mean, the world would be a boring place if we all wrote in architectural block lettering.(oh god...horrible memories from drafting class coming back to me now)

That's what font selection is for. I have you pegged as a brush script user

I use print, I know enough cursive to write my full name in cursive. Good enough for me.

Cursive is meant to be more efficient than print. Less picking the pen up.

My teachers gave up on my handwriting. The deal was you had to write in pencil until your handwriting was deemed to be good enough for you to graduate to using a pen. I never graduated to pen. My handwriting is still awful, I don't think it's changed much since I was eight years old.

I think handwriting naturally develops to be cursive, or at least have cursive characteristics. If you have to write fast, in an exam for example, you don't take your pen off the page as much. I never saw the point of it being taught, in fact it's not in New Zealand schools.

I write with my left hand. So naturally it's barely legible.

This. Being able to speak and write clearly and in grammatically-correct sentences should take precedence over cursive, which due to underuse belongs in an elective course.

I was taught cursive very badly and required to use an italic fountain pen.
Writing with a ballpoint now is a struggle, the sides wear off pretty quickly.
