I used to rave all over the Roku.  Awesome netflix player for it's time.  And back then, the WD TV Live+ HD version sucked at Netflix.   Terrrible interface and slow as ass to navigate through the movies.  Constant buffering.  Terrible.  That is until WD got Netflix 3.0.  Now, Roku is still stuck on the older Netflix version.  While the Roui is good and fine, I do wish it also got Netflix 3.0, because that version is miles better.

I like the WD but they won't pick up Hulu plus till the end of the year .... then theres the one time cost $109 vs $79

yeah, i think it was $200.  dad wrote it off as a business expense so its pretty insignificant

we've had problems with it twice now with it randomly not wanting to play a video, then after about 10 tries it finally playing it

Yeah, Hulu Plus.  But I hate paying for less content than regular Hulu.  Albeit, requiring a PC instead of just a set-top box.

Yea that's twice as much as the top Roku player. I considered the apple TV.. but then I read this.

Granted thats coming from Roku .. but its accurate. I'm curious to see how well it does streaming from a USB stick. .. or even that portable wd drive I just bought :-).

Is the wd TV Wireless? That is an absolute must for me. How does the content stackup to the Roku?

still working on setting up the networking features of the boxee box but i havent been at home much - i got music working perfectly though, fantastic ui for that, movies and shows.  one of the best features ive noticed is that if it cant find what movie/show to match it to in the database it actually tells you, unlike some media managers which try to hide it.

wdtv is either wireless or supports wireless usb adapters, i forget which.

Yes, you need to also buy a USB wifi adapter for the WD TV. I'm actually setting up my parents for netflix streaming today. I'm going to buy them the wd tv live plus. Perhaps only for my own personal comparison..lol. I can't get a hold of a Roku locally anyways. They don't really need the extra streaming content.
Maybe I'll do a review of the two.

WC, what formats do you like for streaming (from an external drive) to television? I have a 52" XBR and my Parents have a 55" Mitsu. I'm just wondering what is going to give us the best results on larger TV's whilst still maintaining reasonable files sizes.

Ok, I got the Sony SMP-N100 for my parents. I found it for $75, it was open box. It also came with an extended 2 year warranty. I'm kind of blown away at the performance considering the price.
Built in WIFI provided full strength from one side of the house to the other, This is one of the areas that I thought might be lacking. It wasn't.

Minimal buffering to start. I streamed two full movies and it never stuttered once.

The picture quality was great. Not that you'll be able to tell from my phone video.. but anyways.

Navigating was easy, but not as pretty as it could be. For the price that's a small complaint. The most important thing is getting quickly to where you want.
Of course it has a usb port for external drives. You can also connect a usb keyboard for convenience.

Maybe I'll do a proper review with better pictures later on. Unless the Roku is considerably better I'll probably send it back and pick up another one of these.

a x264 matroska encode should work fine, wireless n will work for all but the absolute highest bitrate 1080p videos (ie the 25GB LOTR encodes and stuff like that)

from an external drive, anything will play.  the best performance/size depends entirely on the type of movie (animation, live action, etc) and how well the bluray itself was mastered, but usually you can get away with 7-10GB 1080p files without noticing any quality loss.

Yea I've thrown a variety of different files at it, and for the most part there isn't much noticeable difference in quality. I fancy myself a videophile, but I think I worried a bit needlessly about getting the absolute best quality. I have noticed there's some upscalling going on as well. I'm also going to stream a bunch of tv shows, and they really just need to be typical broadcast quality. I think I'm going to set my network up for dlna sharing/streaming. I need to investigate it more though.

I picked up a Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1 TB USB 3.0/2.0 for $75 today Renewed giganews also.

yeah its also a factor of how far away you are and stuff like that.  i watch most of my movies on a 27" monitor so i can easily spot the difference between 720p and 1080p, and almost always the difference between scene 1080p and internal 1080p.

wow, nice price for a USB 3.0 TB drive, wish we could get prices like that here

I personally love it. Great performance, good webcam, and can handle even Starcraft II pretty well.
