Seriously though, aren't police resources better used than to arrest people for feeding the homeless? It seems a pretty heavy handed approach to what is basically charity.
They really forced the police dept's hand by calling attention to themselves. The police even made sure everyone was fed before making the arrest. I mean it's not like they don't care. This was more of a protest than a feeding.

If you want to know what some of the questions are on a Group Feeding permit ..
  • Describe how and where all foods on the menu will be stored, prepared, transported, cooked, and served at the event. No extensivefood preparation may be done onsite at the events. All foods must be prepared before the event at a licensed commissary. Only final foodassembly, cooking, and serving at the event will be allowed.
  • List equipment and describe facilities that will be used at the temporary food establishment. All temporary food establishments musthave adequate cooking, hot holding (>135F), and refrigeration facilities (<41F).
  • Describe how hands will be washed.
  • How will wastewater and garbage be disposed?
Fucking fascists!
That is true they attracted the attention in the first place, and it's a good point you make about the police waiting till everyone is fed before moving in. On one hand you could argue that they were simply trying to get the most numbers but I would like to think, as I'm sure you do too, that they were simply being sympathetic to their cause whilst still carrying out their duty.

To the second part, it is basic food handling practice. I can understand why a permit is required, but up to 60 days prison???

Some might consider that a rather light sentence if they inadvertently sent dozens of people to the emergency room. It's also likely the judge will show some leniency. It's probably just going to be a $150 fine.

The police were not "simply trying to get the most numbers". There isn't some Police vs FNB rivalry. The police are usually pretty lenient and they are given some discretion. FNB has even served the police before. As I said, FNB had to go and ruin the party by demanding attention. Understand that these people wanted to get arrested. They encouraged and organized it. I think they even had another feeding yesterday and no one was arrested. Orlando has offered to give them a designated spot around Lake Eola which is only about a 20 minute walk from where they were arrested. That spot is much better, it even has tables and portable toilets .

They can't think or act independently. That's why they are idiots. They can't be associated with any act that isn't dumb shit by default.

The group lost a court battle in April, clearing the way for the city to enforce the ordinance. It requires groups to obtain a permit and limits each group to two permits per year for each park within a 2-mile radius of City Hall.

Arrest papers state that Cross, Markeson and McHenry helped feed 40 people Wednesday night. The ordinance applies to feedings of more than 25 people.
I know it's a douche bag thing to say but feeding the homeless is like feeding stray cats. They'll stay in the area for the handout. I'm guessing that the city doesn't want them to congregate since Orlando is known for being a tourist spot.

Or at least keep them in one spot anyway everything.

That's fine and all.

How bad is Florida's homeless problem anyway? Last time I was there the highways in and around Tampa had homeless people begging on them. I was surprised by the amount.

Where at in Tampa specifically? Yea if you go in to certain urban areas you're going to run in to some. You will in any major city.

My grandparents live in some suburb. I don't know the name off the top of my head. While we were on the highway (it seemed like a highway) to the gun ranges in some of the more urban areas I saw them.

I just never see that amount in the urban areas around here. Is the city giving them those orange vest they were?

It's less than 0.7% of the population in my county, which is actually high for Florida.

I was going to say something similar. Aren't most of these types of things in "downtown" areas over there anyway? There's not much need to have it in a nice area near the town hall....

illegally fed homeless people? it's sickening that there are laws against feeding the starving.
The reason for the laws is to ensure the food the homeless people are getting isn't tainted. When I'd volunteer we'd have to throw out like half the food we got because it didn't follow the standards for acceptable. A lot of times people will give out food because they want to clear their pantry without looking at how old it is or if it's already been opened or not, so it rots. Even if you're giving out fresh grown food, there's a concern that you want manage it properly and thus there will be a breakout of e.coli or something or other.

I'm not saying I necessarily agree with all the regulations, I'm just explaining why they exist.(not to put hippies in jail).

FNB "repatriates" much of their food from dumpsters after it's been thrown out by restaurants and grocers

?
Saw it on the show "Bizarre Foods" on Travel Channel. Here's an article about the episode.

Andrew literally digs deep to find San Francisco's food counter-culture. He accompanies the non-profit group Food Not Bombs to "rescue" food from grocery and restaurant dumpsters to feed the homeless.

Edible definitely  meets the political on his outing with Katie Chamberlain and Margie White from Food Not Bombs. Chamberlain and White call themselves "freegans," vegans who acquire free food that's either donated or rescued from store or restaurant dumpsters. Andrew seems a bit wary when they open up dumpster tops on the street, and he is shocked at what he finds.

"I went out expecting that the food  tossed away was an apple here an apple there," he says. Instead, they discover huge amounts of packaged food: 50 pound crates of bananas, 10 pounds of strawberries, and boxes of lettuce.

Of course, having watched the episode, not all of the food was packaged, making the thought of eating it out of a dumpster quite a bit less appealing (or sanitary). But it does bring home the point about the amount of food that goes to waste.

Yeah. I think we all get that.

Doesn't explain Anonymous' jackassery, though.

Anonymous is essentially a bunch of socially retarded fan boys who think they are being edgy. Occasionally they organize stuff themselves and carry it off very much the exception though. More frequently the people that first founded Anonymous (and have since moved on) organise things at a much higher level (see Lulzsec) and manipulate the new fags to get involved for safety in numbers etc or just to blame it on Anonymous as its the ideal scape goat.

I don't quite understand why they rejected a permit. Seems a pretty pointless thing to protest. It's not like it's "red tape in the way of humanitarian efforts", it's just a city managing its own affairs. If I started feeding pigeons at an outdoor parking lot I'm pretty sure the city would be on my arse about it. Likewise if this group starts handing out food to the homeless they're going to flock to one point, the city has a right to regulate where that's going to be, they don't want a group just setting up shop for the homeless wherever and whenever they please. Come to an arangement with the Council, I'm sure they're not bad guys, they might even relax the permit process a little.

I applaud this group's efforts to help the homeless but this regecting permits thing is an example of tilting at windmills - and pointlessly too. Either they can agree to the pretty reasonable permit process or better yet, negotiate to come up with an alternative arrangement. Flat out refusing it all reeks of pigheadedness.

Anonymous... they're a passionate group. That being the case they often don't fully consider a case and just go for the party that is going to garner the most public sympathy at first glance. This thing though, first the protests, now Anonymous declaring war, is making a mountain out of a molehill and unfortunately is actually getting in the way of the good work that Food Not Bombs do.
