Nah, it was because Hitler was a megalomaniac.13rin wrote:

Adolf Hitler wrote:
The fact that the Japanese Government, which has been negotiating for years with this man, has at last become tired of being mocked by him in such an unworthy way, fills us all, the German people, and all other decent people in the world, with deep satisfaction...Germany and Italy have been finally compelled, in view of this, and in loyalty to the Tri-Partite Pact, to carry on the struggle against the U.S.A. and England jointly and side by side with Japan for the defense and thus for the maintenance of the liberty and independence of their nations and empires...As a consequence of the further extension of President Roosevelt's policy, which is aimed at unrestricted world domination and dictatorship, the U.S.A. together with England have not hesitated from using any means to dispute the rights of the German, Italian and Japanese nations to the basis of their natural existence...Not only because we are the ally of Japan, but also because Germany and Italy have enough insight and strength to comprehend that, in these historic times, the existence or non-existence of the nations, is being decided perhaps forever.
Won't argue with the megalomaniac part. Shoulda waited to attack the USSR.Jay wrote:

I think a conflict with the US was inevitable and Hitler knew it. His timing sucked ass. He wanted Britannia. Only way to get it was if he could effect a good blockade and cut them off from the rest of the world. In order to do so, he had to turn his UBoats loose.Adolf Hitler wrote:

he couldn't. stalin would stab him in the back. hitler's diplomatic maneuvers between ussr and the west were actually very good and the timing, at least with regards to his attack on ussr, was just about perfect - several more months and soviet army would have finished being moved and would be ready to receive on the western border, while all the undustry stalin build up for war would've been evacuated - or ready to be evacuated - east. blitz krieg against ussr wouldn't have been possible at all. as it happened, nazies caught ussr by surprise and all the regrouping and evacuation had to be done on the fly. that's the only reason nazies got as far as they did.Trotskygrad wrote:

tbh his best plan would've been to knock all of western europe out, including britain... if he concentrated all his forces Britain would've fallen before the US would have a chance to intervene. Then focus on the USSR (with japan's halp) and the US
why?Macbeth wrote:
Uh didn't Germany declare war on the U.S. after we declared war on Japan? Can't stay out of Europe in that case.

well arguably Nazi Germany could've finished up the war with britain a lot earlier if he focused on bombing military targets in the battle of britain.Shahter wrote:

as i said, stalin was on the move. by focusing in britain, hitler would allow stalin to finish fortifying the new western border of ussr. plus, you are forgetting the climate: blitz krieg cannot happen in autumn in russia, because nothing can advance when all the roads turn into mud - that's another coupla months for soviets to prepare. as i said, hitler's timing was perfect, it's just that ussr turned out too be too much for him - still, it was a pretty close call.Trotskygrad wrote:

depends, it's the what-if game all over again.

It's rather hard to be isolationist when another country has declared war on you, no?11 Bravo wrote:

what does that have to do with asking the question?
