Really questionable career choice from Portman, she has the talent to pick and chose the roles she plays and make herself one of Hollywood's finest, yet she does dribble like this and "Your Highness"....shame really.

The problem is, for all those energy based weapons, the energy density is way too low and will definitely be for a long time into the future.
Any generic gunpowder propelled bullet/flechette/grenade delivered from a hand-held weapon does a lot more damage than any energy weapon of the same size could do.
That is, if you don't want to exchange batteries after every shot.

Also, lasers/masers don't work that well in an atmosphere, as scattering and skin depth respectively would drastically reduce the range and power.
Coil/rail guns are a more promising approach, but still limited to large, vehicle-mounted versions.

It was my problem with the movie (havent seen it yet, really want to) Thor just isnt as well know as the X-men, batman, spiderman etc. Especially here. he never had a cartoon here and comics arent a big scene(its very small, few shops that sell em). My family finally roped me into seeing it the other night.  I feel that if the movie was not hyped to be the second coming of jesus, except this time jesus was handing out free cookies and blow jobs, I probably would have enjoyed it more.  That hype is basically the reason why it took so long for me to see it; too much hype builds high or low expectations and kinda kills my desire to see somethin.

Anywho, decent sci-fi flick, I do enjoy the sense of a universe that was created.  Acting was fairly decent too.  There are were a few too many cliches like the over-the-top evil marine general (capt. kittenkill as gravy dan once called him ) and Spoiler (highlight to read):
the fact that the super-advanced human forces were beat by some natives and animals.


Overall, good film and im interested to see how the sequels pan out.

It's a prep movie for the avengers, the point is to get his name out there.

christian bale fucking kills it, one of the best performances i've seen in a long time.  Compared to the short clip of the real Dick Eklund at the end, he fucking nailed the guy.  Thought Walhberg's performance was a little wooden and the portrayal of the family-at-large a little over the top, but all in all a great movie.
