I understand that starting in the military allows people to get a college education when they might otherwise not be able to do that.
But also there are a lot of dregs who don't have any better ideas and want an opportunity to push people around and kill people which they wouldn't normally get either - except maybe in Wisconsin.

Your argument is that people in the infantry are generally stupid.
That is not true, and don't you base your argument on exceptions. And even then, they're supposed to do their jobs and if they do it good - who cares?

I have yet to meet anyone in the infantry that I would describe as intelligent.Shocking wrote:

Sure, they wont be able to solve a difficult equations, but neither can i.
theyre good at what they do (better than most 'intelligent' people). I wouldnt want them as my doctor, but i wouldnt want my doctor to do what they do either.

it's easy to base perceptions only on a skewed sample...
plus if you believe something you're likely only to consider cases that support your PoV
a soldier is not meant to be intelligent. if he is, he is not qualified.

do you want a stupid general?
Exactly. Even Colonel's are foot soldiers. I have a nephew, honor student, went ROTC, now an officer serving in Afghanistan on the ground. His dad was military, and he wanted to be military as well. It wasn't about the money. Family is wealthy enough. Older brother smart as hell as well, and already had a six figure job lined up for him before graduation.Trotskygrad wrote:

A high school classmate of mines, and his sister, both honor students, both accepted to West Point.
My cousin, went into military just as an army medic. He's now in line to be CFO.
Yeah, anecdotal. Deal with it.

I could've gone into academia quite easily. I wanted to join the Army from since I can remember. The scores I got on my tests made me eligible for every single career choice in the Army and I still chose to go Infantry. It's what I wanted to do, nothing compared.Vilham wrote:

The military can afford to be a lot more selective now. Everyone wants a stable job that pays relatively well and so they can pick and choose. You might have been right, 5 years ago...

The job choice with the highest requirments was Military Police when I took the test. Which is made up of about 95% cunts. Give me an Infantryman anyday.Shocking wrote:
Are we talking about your average grunt? Why would people try put them down, they're not expected to be extraordinarily intelligent, they're supposed to do their jobs. They do them good. Infantry NCO's and officers on the other hand do have certain expectations to live up to.Kampframmer wrote:

People in the SF however are usually above average intelligence. I don't see how people in the infantry would be more stupid than anywhere else in the armed forces. Actually, I'd argue that being able to cope with all the shit you get thrown at you (disproportionally much compared to other people in service) does require you to stay sharp and concentrated for extended periods of time.
jord and kmar are correct.jord wrote:

Dilbert, when are you off to fight with the PLO?

As much shit as people give infantrymen "bullet sponge", "cannon fodder" etc some of the smartest people I've ever met were in the infantry. Knew a guy in basic that scored perfect on every facet of the entrance exam. He joined to become a Ranger.
No, you can't be stupid and be infantry, no matter how many movies say otherwise. The idiots are all in the rear as cooks, laundry personnel, mechanics, supply, and truck drivers.
