Filming began a few weeks ago and apparently Peter Jackson is going to be providing short behind-the-scenes clips throughout production.

And here is the first one.  Here's PJ's FB video link

Looks like Jackson is getting fat again.

I don't nerd out for too many things but Tolkien stuff is definitely on the list.

So, a whole film about what I found a major annoyance in LOTR? Pass.

I remember hearing about this a lil while back and I'm quite lookin forward to it.  The LOTR movies are some of my all time favorite films mixing great action and story, so idc that the hobbit may not be action packed Im sure its gonna be great

Nope. I´m quite hesitant when it comes to Elves and similar fantasy. Will at some point though, as it´s kinda a must read.

yep.  John Howe, Alan Lee, Richard Taylor, Andrew Lesnie, Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen.  A lot of LOTR characters are supposed to make appearances.  Not sure if Peter Lyon and Ngila Dickson are on board.  And hopefully Howard Shore will be back to score the films.

Yeah, looks like not many people here have read the book.

Lack of action?  Hello?  One big ass near invulnerable dragon?  Armies of man, elf, dwarf, and orc clashing?  First half is slow and "character development", though.  Besides, for the most part, there is only one hobbit.  And Bilbo wasn't the emo that Frodo was.

Edit: Not orcs, but rather goblin/wargs.

I'm guessing this will be more enjoyable to the average viewer than the first two LotR films...probably a close second to Return of the King, in terms of accessibility to people who aren't familiar with the books.

Plus, if the 3D is well done, it could be especially epic.  3D is, as a whole, pretty gimmicky, but the whole Smaug encounter could and should be quite a scene in Mr. Jackson's hands...

3D these days can look very cool (think jackass 3D), but as long as they just add it as an effect and not make stupid useless scenes that are just there to showcase 3D (like every 3D movie before 2011)

negatory. if by 'here' you mean "people that have posted in this thread named Sisco" then yeah.

the story of The Hobbit is such a wonderful entrance into the LoTR series that i'm kind of mad it didn't come first. i guess i'll be happy that it's going to happen . . .

Yeah, it was quite a leap of faith to develop LOTR first, considering the first part of the trilogy was "slow".  Hobbit would have been the safer bet.

Now, how are they going to explain mead guzzling elves, what with the way the LOTR movies portrayed them earlier.

And, the voice actor for Smaug.  Who could pull that one off?

Alway good seeing Sir Pete back in his element. Might see if I can get involved in this one, I was too young to really do much in LotR. It's all happening a short walk away from me so I may as well check it out.
