Heard yesterday NATO is saying they probably can't achieve their objectives--whatever those are--without a more prominent US role. Which is really telling/a wake up call to those other nations--they can't do whatever they want in Libya from the air with the air armada they have assembled without significant US involvement and/or leadership? Something's seriously wrong with that.

Guaranteed if we took it to the ground it would be a bigger shitstorm. As in, a bunch of people slandering the US about how they did it for the oil.

French official: US Libya re-engagement would help
By REUTERS
04/13/2011 17:06

BRUSSELS - US re-engagement in military strikes would help NATO's Libyan military operation and Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Sweden could step up their efforts, a senior French official said on Wednesday.

The French official said European NATO allies conducting air strikes in Libya did not have A-10 "tank buster" aircraft and AC-130 gunships that are in the US arsenal, and which analysts say would be useful against Gaddafi's armor and artillery.

Sharp differences among NATO allies on the conduct of the air campaign against Muammar Gaddafi's forces surfaced publicly at a meeting of the international "contact group" on Libya in Qatar on Wednesday.

"If the United States provided resources to the current operation, so much the better," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. "But we're not saying that if the US came back it would change everything."

Maybe these European countries should live up the to 3 or 4 % (I honestly can't remember) of GDP that they NATO asks them to spend.

This is kind of interesting, especially the second on spending in 1897:

I have been reading a bunch of things lately about the situation over there and (armchair general alert!) from the looks of it unless some ground troops come in Kadffi might actually win this one.

Seems a bit depressing really that Europe is going to lose to (half of) Libya..

1 billion cut in the defense budget scrapping 6000 jobs forcibly and 6000> in the future. Logistics got fucked, replacements for material in use has been scrapped, all tanks are gone, some navy ships are going to be decomissioned and numerous other stuff. Nope, can't do more cause the cuts have crippled our defense. Same for most other countries in Europe - they're all subjecting their armies to harsh and extensive budget cuts, 5-15% off the budget in lots of countries.

US shouldn't bother tbh. If the EU part of NATO defense is in such a shitty state it's best to stay out of it and let the member nations figure out how to deal with interventions without US help, if you do step in you're simply allowing them to keep going on the same track. Most EU nations have been slashing the defense budget annually for the past 2 decades.

The West has shitty leadership that has gotten too comfortable. And of course there are the retarded budget cuts of the military that makes us even more shit. Have we not learned our lessons in the Korean War?

Military budget cuts? U.S. Military spending has grown like 80% since 2001. It grew something like 2-4% this year alone. And what lesson should we have learned from Korea? To not go near Chinese rivers?

Even besides the budget cuts, most of the equipment has been completely warn out due to missions in the middle east. There isn't an aweful lot to send towards Libia anyway.

OMG We can't allow anyone else to use cluster bombs.

Pro-government forces in Libya have been accused by a human rights campaign group of using cluster bombs, which are banned by more than 100 countries.

Human Rights Watch said one of its photographers had seen three of the bombs explode over a residential area of the rebel-held city of Misrata.

Libya's government has denied the allegation.

Government troops have intensified their siege of Misrata, the only west Libyan city still in rebel hands.

The BBC's Orla Guerin reports from inside the battle-scarred city that local residents fear a massacre without greater action by Nato air forces to break the siege.

A meeting of Nato foreign ministers in Berlin has ended without a commitment from non-participating states to contribute warplanes despite an appeal by Nato chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

The US, UK and France have said in a joint statement that the threat to Libyan civilians will not disappear while Colonel Muammar Gaddafi remains in power.
