A more realistic response to such a shotgun malfunction would be to drop the shotgun (after the first "pop", before the catastrophic failure), immediately transition to pistol.

Oh, right!  In "practical" shooting matches, you're only allowed to transition weapons at the pretend make-believe transition points, not when you'd actually want to..   sorry, forgot...

Hell, there was a military shoot-house, four stories, with pop-up targets throughout.  You landed on the roof in a helicopter, shot your way down to the first floor split up into fire teams.  And if, say, a guy got his nose blown off by a ricocheting 9mm round, your medic did immediate first-aid, then carried his ass down the remaining two floors , clearing the remaining rooms as he went. (with the remaining nose chunk in the wrapper for the bandage).
