We got a letter through the post the other day saying Fiber is available in my area, despite looking into it when it first came out. Virgin said they'd have to dig up my road. Said it'd be £2-3K. Said they wouldn't pay for it. So we'll see what they say when I phone them and tell them about the letter they sent me
I grew up about 1200 feet from the closest cable internet lines.  We received similar notices from several providers, but every time we would be told that we were too far out, that digging the lines would be costly, and that the company wouldn't pay for it.

Standard MO of telecomms I guess.

What gets me is that there are plenty of houses around...I'm sure each individual family, were they to request the service, would be told the exact same thing, with no one at the company ever stopping to say, "Hmmm, if 20 families in this region want our service, maybe $3000 to dig a trench for some cable might be worth it......"

Instead, they continue to hold out until some idiot pays for them to do what they should be doing in the first place - expanding their services.

It's laughable to hear politicians talk about how broadband access needs to be expanded, and then to actually talk to a service provider about doing so.

Those fuckers won't do it til they are literally forced to by regulations.

I guess karma is in effect though, because the two places I've lived since then have both been on very low activity nodes, and I get full speed pretty much all day, every day (~25-30 mbps, while friends with the same service in other parts of town get around 7)

I don't get why the rest of the world is so far behind South Korea when it comes to internet. I mean, I get that ISP's want to make as much money as possible, but surely the cost of the infrastructure isn't that much more than it over here?

Ok, that's a valid argument for Canada or the US, but not for countries like the Netherlands or even the UK.

I hate that its a valid argument for Canada. Even with the low population density, they should be able to greatly improve it.

Oh of course, but the fact of the matter is laying cables right the way across Canada is going to be far more expensive than doing so in South Korea or the Netherlands.

i've never been to the UK or NL, but I from what ive heard, population denisty is way higher in SK than in the netherlands.  people live in the tiniest spaces possible, my cousin lives there and his entire apartment is about the size of our living room + dining room

i assume it has a lot to do with culture/priorities too.  SK/Japan have always seemed more connected and technologically developed than most other countries

SK and NL are 23 and 30 respectively on the world population density list.

Just ran this one... when we moved in we were paying for an 8Mb/s line and the company keeps upgrading us. Only been here for a little shy of 2 years, too!

Only gripe is that upload could be nicer, but the download is absolutely stout. Even at peak time I still pull down this rate.

Not to mention countries like Japan and S. Korea have had United States military presence for decades now, and the decreased defense spending can translate into improving infrastructure and other things.

It's because after the war in SK, they re-wired absolutely everything and dug all the shit from the ground, so the entire country is connected with top of the range fibre wire. UK and the rest of us thought that copper wiring would be "fine" so we left it too long to upgrade entirely.

The same applies to the British railway. We thought it was "good enough for the rest of time" but now we're behind everybody else in that aspect. It's all about arrogance and ignorance.

Cammy, divide your download given there by 8 and that's your download speed, basically.

The first one gives a result of 2.46. It's all good.

Idk if anyone has heard of or used this but i thought it was a cool little program called xkill

Developer wrote:

An App that your using Freezes, and your first thought it to CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up Task manager, then you have to wade thought the processes to find said frozen app, then kill it... Or you use xKill.

Using a system wide hook in xKill, when it is running, just Press Control+Alt+Backspace, and you will see a Skull and Crossbones follow behind your cursor. When you click on the next item (say, the frozen application), it will kill it. simple.

And just because i know that people will try this out with out having an app to kill, when the skull and crossbones is up, if you choose NOT to kill any thing, press Escape, and you will exit out of xKill mode.

No external references, this app is Portable, you will know when it is running doe to the color changing Skull and Crossbones in your system tray. you can Right click on the glowing icon to either go in to xKill mode, so that you don't have to do Control + Alt + Backspace, or you can exit out of xKill.
