These are all the quakes of magn. 5 and up in the last four days around the world, I have never seen this many occur consecutively in a single area. Unbelievable.

I saw that linked on 4chans /k/ board. Wasnt too sure if it was legit. Showed it to a friend and said he didnt think the radiation would spread that far because it was a different type of plant to Chernobyl. I then brought up the point that the wind would most likely come from east-west and cover China, but he said that west-east winds around Japan are common.

I'd take that pic with a pinch of salt.

Quake moved Japan coast 8 feet; shifted Earth's axis

Happened with the 2004 Tsunami too, quakes are crazy shit. I still think it's amazing how intact the country is, relatively speaking. The media talk about nuclear meltdowns and Chernobyl examples but it's nowhere near that...they said four workers got injured in the nuclear power plant blast. Four. There are probably more videos on the internet of people standing on the side filming the tsunami/earthquake than there are victims. To me it's all surreal, it's a huge natural disaster..there's alot of damage but nearly everyone seems to be ok.

Uh mek, this is FAR from being over. 9,500 people have been reported missing in a single town, 500 more are already confirmed dead, and an additional who knows how many people are missing - including 4 entire passenger trains which have vanished.

Furthermore, MAJOR infrastructure damage and as you can see by Jenspm's post the entire fucking coastline is missing. Here's a little idea of the scale:

https://www.sdgs.usd.edu/publications/maps/earthquakes/images/RichterScale.gif

Ten largest earthquakes ever recorded, this one registers 6th

1     May 22, 1960     Valdivia, Chile     1960 Valdivia earthquake     9.5
2     March 27, 1964     Prince William Sound, Alaska, USA     1964 Alaska earthquake     9.2

This is a disaster of fucking enormous proportions. Someone in california has been killed because he got swept out to sea as a result of the earthquake.

No, noone is OK.

He must have had to try his hardest to become the sole non-Japanese fatality of this earthquake because every other place in Pacific region seemed to have handled it fine.

The damage is huge and the relative number of victims for a modern place like Japan is also pretty big, but you need to realise just how amazing or surreal it is as to how small scale the disaster actually turned out to be. That's all I'm saying. The difference between a tiny earthquake hitting a third world country and causing hundreds of thousands of deaths, vs a mega quake with super aftershocks in the pacific region resulting in so far... about 700 confirmed death

They said 90,000 yesterday. Granted, for 10,000 to still be missing in a country like that is something to take notice of. I'll be very surprised if this earthquake tops say... 9/11 in terms of disasters. And that would still say quite alot, IMO.

I don't understand how you can even say that when the entire coast is still covered in water. The damage cannot be measured yet, at all. Today there have already been more than 50 quakes in the same area, it's not over by far.

In total I counted more than 270 quakes over the last 4 days, with the vast majority being above 5.0 in magnitude. People are missing, entire towns have been buried with water - this is not small scale at all. The confirmed death toll can rise in the thousands easily.

1712: Meanwhile the latest report from Kyodo news agency puts the official death toll at 687, with another 650 people missing. But it is not clear whether this figure includes between 200-300 bodies being transferred to Sendai city.

Dude, the city centre of Sendai is intact. This earthquake is called the Sendai earthquake because it was next to it. I'm not saying that alot of shit didn't get destroyed, I'm basically saying it's amazing that the whole area isn't much worse than it is. I'm not the one failing to understand the magnitude of this...you are. I know it's only early days still.

When you have a massive number of videos of people being able to stand there and record this all for YouTube, and so many eyewitness accounts talking about how everything was swaying but the buildings weren't even cracking. You gotta sit back and think that's amazing.

Sendai is a city of 1 million or so, so far...they're saying 200-300 missing. The country even had a network of seismometers that recognised a big one was coming and sent out early warning messages to everyone on TV. Wonder how many lives that saved

Dude who are you anyway, some douche that changed his name or someone old coming back... I don't even know these days. Oh...says right there, dayarth

No, you were calling this all "small scale", which is ridiculous, and you're jumping to conclusions while rescue operations have only just began. It's completely unclear how many people have died, how much property has been damaged and how many people have been displaced, and you tell me I'm the one who's misjudging things?

I'm well aware that Japan knows how to handle itself during an earthquake but you are being completely stupid in saying "oh, its not that bad" - yes, it's not as bad as it could've been, if we compare it to the sumatra quake of 2004 (people put up youtube videos of this tsunami as well btw so that doesnt say shit), 240.000 people died. That's probably way over what will happen in Japan.

Yet, it's still the largest earthquake ever recorded in the history of Japan and the 6th largest ever on the planet. The damage that this will cause, and the amount of lives that will be lost during such an event is going to be enormous even for a wealthy western country such as Japan. Tsunami warnings have been issued in 20 different countries.

News reports indicate that more than 637 people have died so far and at least 10,000 are missing in six prefectures.[15] The earthquake caused extensive damage in Japan, including heavy damage to roads and railways as well as fires in many areas, and a dam collapse. Around 4.4 million households in northeastern Japan were left without electricity and 1.4 million without water.[16] Many electrical generators were taken down, and at least two nuclear reactors were damaged, which prompted evacuations of the affected areas,[17] and a state of emergency was established. The Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant experienced an explosion almost 24 hours after the initial earthquake; however, while the blast caused the collapse of the concrete outer containment building, it was reported that the the integrity of the inner core-containment vessel was not compromised.[18][19][16] Residents within a 20-kilometer (12 mi) radius of the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant and a 10-kilometer (6.2 mi) radius of the Fukushima II Nuclear Power Plant were evacuated.

The estimates of the Sendai earthquake's magnitude would make it the largest earthquake to hit Japan and one of the five largest earthquakes in the world since modern record-keeping began.[20][21][22] It is thought to have been the largest earthquake within the boundaries of the North American and Pacific tectonic plates in 1,200 years.[23]
and

It was reported that four passenger trains containing an unknown number of passengers disappeared in a coastal area during the tsunami.[52] Two of the trains were on the Senseki Line.[48] One of the Senseki Line trains was found derailed in the morning, and all passengers were rescued by a prefectural police helicopter.[53]
Small scale my ass, if you can't take it that someone calls you out on your bullshit and then have to resort to calling me a douche, I suggest you get the fuck out of this section.

10.000 people missing "something to take notice of", gimme a break.

there's no way that this event is small scale. in terms of humanitarian disaster, compared to, say, the boxing day tsunami or the pakistan floods... yeah the damage to human life has been minimal. but even then there's a huge disclaimer that it's EARLY DAYS yet-- the floodwaters haven't even receded. so how can you fully estimate the loss of human life? thankfully, yes, japan have better earthquake/tsuami protection measures and engineering. but a few thousand deaths is no less tragic than tens-of-thousands. it's still a huge disaster.

and that's only the humanitarian angle. as an economic/aid disaster, this is still huge.

it annoyed me quite a bit yesterday when I was watching the coverage on BBC that they got someone on to talk about the instant impact it had on the Yen and electronics companies. They were saying that the Yen would drop, investors would sell. Kinda sickened me that some people only care about the money.

Meh, they're saying the core hasn't been compromised and I'm inclined to believe them. You'd hope with something potentially deadly to that many people they'd be honest and get all the help they can, like they have with the humanitarian efforts.

Just tell everyone there's no cure and they're pretty much guaranteed death if exposed too long. Should calm people down.
