Why are there not a ton of frontline soldiers coming home deaf? I've fired a pistol without ear protection before and it left them ringing for a while, and while I wasn't deaf I had a hard time hearing things for quite a few minutes. Soldiers in a firefight are exposed to a lot more loud sounds, and it doesn't seem like they're wearing ear protection.
they aren't deaf but most of them do have hearing loss and tinnitus. and i guess it gets worse as they get older.  Most of the ww2 and many of the vietnam combat vets i've known had serious hearing problems.

Anything but a .22 rifle is too much for me to tolerate without ear protection.  Even .22 pistols are too loud for me.  gives me a headache just thinking about it.

Just recently fired off a 12 gauge without any hearing protection.  Could not hear out of my right ear for about 2 min and had a nice ringing for a lil while after that.  I woulda thought a firecracker had gone off next to my head

Totally worth it though, shotguns are fucking

Man, my ears must already be fucked, cause 12 gauges don't hurt mine a bit.

We have hearing protection on us always. Even in garrison. Ear plugs are an inspectible item. They're made so that they muffle gunfire/explosions but at the same time we can still communicate with each other.

Ear plugs catch the high frequencies, only ear defenders catch the lower frequencies, or most of them.

Ok folks, the decision has been made along with the purchase. I am now the proud father of a brand new Sig Sauer P220 SS Elite. Me and the boys took it to the range ( along with their arsenal) and put 200 flawless rounds through it. I couldn't be happier. Any home intruder should be honored to be blown away with this gun. What a fantastic shooter. Appreciate all the advice .

good choice.

I've got these on my P220 and I could never go back.

And if you want more magazines save yourself the aggravation and just pay the high Sig price for theirs.

yeah I noticed how much extra mags were, but hey, the gun wasn't cheap either so.

Dunno if I can bring myself to replace the rosewood grips that are already on the gun. It looks so gooooooooood. Feels great in my hand anyway.

Big gun collection.

My "new" CZ 52 in 7.62 tokarev.  Somewhat finicky, especially about the slide locking back on the last shot and staying locked back, but still quite a bit of fun to shoot for a couple hundred bucks.  Also, there's a fair amount of after market parts for it so I might do some customization, if nothing else getting an extended slide release so I can drop the slide without yanking it back/manually lock the slide back easily.

Was watching Hostage last night and noticed Bruce had rubber bands on the grip of his Glock. It looked like a subcompact, judging by the size. Is that a common (rudimentary) addition for improving grip?

Typically people just get one of these if they don't like the grip:

Ordered a Surefire MR09 rail adapter for the USP. Think I might get one for the Springfield.

300 WSM, now wearing a Nightforce 8-32x56.

Traded in the Trashijcon, err, Trijicon for a Nightforce 6-22x50..  NF focus ring was locked in place from the factory, traded that in for a slightly better Nightforce NXS 8-32x56.  Very happy with the NXS 8-32x56.

Zeroed with the new scope a few days ago.
Worked up a couple of good loads a few weeks ago.
210 Berger + RL-17 @2867fps, and 150 Nosler Ballistic Tips + RL-17 @3484fps.
4 round total velocity spread was only 3 fps & 5 fps, respectively, at the most consistent charge on each ladder.

Tomorrow, off to see how screaming fast the Barnes 130 TTSX can get with a good accuracy node.
Expecting 3750 fps w/ RL-17, and perhaps 3500 fps w/H4350

RL-17 is interesting stuff... burn control chemical clear through the kernel, rather than just on the surface.
Loads like 4350, but accuracy nodes are about +2gr higher, (i.e. accuracy nodes for H4350 at 58gr and 60gr, RL17 at 60gr and 62gr)
and velocities are 2.2% higher than the same powder charge of H4350 (i.e. 2754 @60gr RL17, 2693 @60gr H4350)

Plan is;
210 Berger non-VLD, loaded to 3.1" for single loaded long range rounds
150 Ballistic Tips for deer/antelope/etc
130 TTSX for coyote killers.

https://i52.tinypic.com/1ijrpl.png

Nightforce NP-R1 reticle, illumination off (left) and illumination on (right).
MOA reticle, MOA turrets.
Getting a camera to take a good picture of a scope reticle is an interesting task.
Took about 4 tries and 10 minutes to get it right.

I could, but I'm probably never going to have that rifle in a desert environment.
Still have my "chocolate chip" desert BDU hat, but that pattern looks as dated as vietnam tiger stripe anymore.

Only environments that rifle will likely ever see are Montana & Alaska, winter & summer.

Might do a matte black or matte dark green on the barrel, if the matte stainless glares too much for coyote hunting.
(Doubtful)

For winter, do the white cloth strips wrap.  3" wide gauze bandage, if need be.

Might have to give Birdsong a call, eventually.

Or stainless blackening with Robar, as it already has a bead-blasted matte finish that'd look good with the stainless blackening treatment.

My 21st birthday is coming up and I was thinking about getting myself a pistol as a self gift. I was probably going to get a glock and put on one of those crimson trace lasers but then I realized I really don't need a gun at all for anything. So instead I decided to just save my money. /cool story
